If a walmart employee asked to check I would say "none of your damn business" as I walked away. Then again I never, ever shop at walmart

So what you just bought at their store is none of their damn business? Okay.....

So what if one of you local mom and pop stores decided to do the same to protect them from shoplifters?

Since I am OP I turn this in to this, my true frustration. I check out. I have everything in a bag, or just carrying a xyz - one item. They sometimes are looking right at you as you check out. Why must I stop just to let them look at my receipt when all they do is glance at it and mark it with a marker!?

There have been many times where I simply just hand my receipt and keep walking. What happens then? I clearly have a receipt. I bought everything with a credit card - so there is a record, as well.

What happens if I just ignore them?! If I just say "no?" "I'm in a hurry, sorry?" "Not today?"

At what point does it become neccessary for a merchanidiser to create a scene and to remain unseen?

The merchandiser does not make the scene. It's the the person who refuses to show the reciept that the merchandiser requires that is making the scene.

That is very interesting point. I work with a lot of...shady... people. They have told me many stories of boosting things and offered me many items. They never steal from Walmart. They chose your smaller stores, your minimall and stripmall locations. Your mom-and-pop stores, too. Simply because it is easier. Walmart deters theft because they are proactive at it but having a 60+ year old woman at the door cannot be that much of a factor.

Think about it...a teenager might be a little scared and give tell tale signs of shoplifting to the old woman as he walks out, but what is she going to do? They don't carry radios and it is the security detail in the door right at the exit/enterence that intervenes. It is - well, I do not really get why they do it?!

Why don't you try reading what Smurf said, the person I was replying to.

Ok, point made and accepted.

But I still have no idea why all you people are so rebellious against a simple request?

My dad owned a small general store many years ago. He always bitched about how much money he lost for shoplifters.

Once the customer buys the product, the product no longer belongs to the store. The item belongs to the customer.

That is the core of the issue.

They would see what I bought at the register. No need to ask again 20 feet as I walk towards door. That is none of their damn business. If they really cared, they should of paid attention when I bought it.

And me and my local stores are friends. When you have people over for dinner- do you ask to check their pocket books when they leave?

So everyone that walks in the store is a friend of theirs. If they get so frustrated with shoplifting they post someone at the door to check your bag what would you do? Who is to say that once someone buys their merchandise they wander the store and start to load that bag with stolen goods. You may be their "friend" but when you're in the retail business you trust no one. Let me ask you. Have you ever walked out the back door of a restaurant where you worked with something you didn't buy?

Yes, once the customer buys the product it is theirs. The store is just making sure that you have in fact paid for everything in your bag. I don't have an issue with that seeing I know how much stuff is stolen from stores.

There is difference between "employee" and "customer". Two completely different issues.

Most stores have video cameras at the cash registers, recording the whole transaction. What is being displayed at the cash register is also being inserted into the recording.

Store personnel can tell instantaneously whether or not something has been scanned for purchase.

So, to get to the core of the issue, why must a customer prove to the store he has paid for everything in his bag, when the store already has a complete video record of the transaction proving he did in fact pay for it?

Let me throw out a question to you. You said you do a lot of online shopping. How would you feel if the UPS guy suddenly starts demanding to see the confirmation/receipt page you were supposed to print out before he hands over the package?

If that's what UPS required I give it to him. I'm easy.

If you don't want to comply, just keep moving, don't be confrontational and just ignore them. Carry yourself in a confident and authoritative manner, again, WITHOUT BEING CONFRONTATION. There are times when I "regroup" after the sale before I leave the door and don't want to be hasseled with digging the paperwork out again... It is usually to put away my money. Maybe I am OCD? :D Nothing about being rebellious, just don't want to be hassled. Just keep quiet and keep on walking. If that is too hard, just "pick and roll." If they are stopping people, just wait till they ask somebody else and then leave around them. It really isn't about being rebellious with me more than its about the policy being a PINTA... Like I said, I usually "regroup" within the confines of the store than having to sort through your dough and other crap in an open area or my vehicle. If they come up to me while I packing my crap (sales receipt and money) away, I got no problem with a comply. I will use the confines of the store for what it is worth... It is just habit especially when you are in rough parts of town, I don't want to be disorganized and I want the ability to carry myself well. Asking to see my stuff is a PINTA. Just a personal safety habit... Unless they are a cop, I don't even acknowledge the request.

I am easy too. When UPS (or others) deliver at work, I probably should ask for their TWIC card. But then again, I am there to escort them.

No. I don't want to be fumbling for stupid crap that I already paid for to satisfy some flunky's desire to be more OCD than me!

I may be all for peace, love, and happiness... But once I file my crap away in my pockets, it doesn't come out and get checked (again) till I get home. Maybe you walk around clueless and are easy about submitting to people's demands, but I am not.

Frankly, I never had a problem... I don't know what the big deal is... You pay for the stuff and walk out...

I am really not against Wal-Mart as much as I am against how the use the system. Why should they undercut, underpay employees and then steer them to social services. Why don't they just pay better wages?

I don't shop at Walmart or places that ask for my reciept. But it I did on a regular basis I'd make sure I didn't put away my reciept until I exited the store.

And yeah I'm with ya man. Reaching into the bag or my pocket for that reciept is a B word.

So you feel you're being required to do this by the "flunky" at the door. No, that would be a policy created by the company. I'm of the belief that a company can make any rules they want when you're in their store. It's up to me whether or not I want to shop there. If, for whatever reason, I choose to shop there I'll follow those rules.

And you know that receipt check is coming so why even put it away in the first place?

Yes... I don't want to be fumbling with it near the door. Look, I got no problem with it... They see me putting my crap away... Be beholden to me and approach me... I will show it to them. The burden should be on them. Like I said, maybe OCD... But they are more... I don't want to be dropping crap looking like Hansel and Gretel going to grandma's house.

I wonder if any place has created a system yet where any purchased goods are immediately brought to the door either by an employee or some sort of machine. You can't claim your goods until you show your receipt. That would essentially end this issue. It's probably not practical from a money point of view and of course someone would complain about something, so obviously it will never happen.

Interesting you say that. Remember catalog stores like Brand Names and Montgomery Ward?

Service Merchandise also. I remember going there when I was young. All the product was kept in the back, only one demo item on a shelf. Write down the product number, go pay at the register, then go and wait at pickup for the item to come out. Eventually they went with the standard dept store model with everything out on the floor. Then they went out of business.
