A Few Thoughts About The Game

1) Fitz might not have had his best statistical game yesterday, but a couple of those throws were the nicest I have ever seen him make. This would include both touchdowns, and a particular sideline pattern to Nelson.

 

2) He doesn't show up on the game stat sheet, but I saw Troup penetrating, and we really must hope that he develops more as the season closes.

 

3) I think that this game brought us closer to the realization that the OT position is hurting. I know, Bell was hurt last year, he is green, etc. But, the sack that he gave up to Misi (who admittedly looks like a monster), almost got Fitzy killed. And, there was a lack of running room all day.

 

4) It is official. I am a fan of Reggie Corner. Random statement? Sure, but he does what is asked of him. I freaked out when he was drafted (the position AND name), but he is a contributor.

 

 

5) It's tough to write this because I like the guy SO much, but I'm getting just a bit concerned with Moorman.

 

6) Whitner made 2 nice plays in a row just before the half. It was also good to see him on a blitz package. Then again, that was a sweet pick by Wilson, ya know?

 

7) Kyle Williams, from what I could see, was being double teamed for most of the game but he still made plays. He caught Ricky Williams by surprise on that screen and really banged him out! He knew exactly where that play was going, ran to the perfect place and put a monster hit on a very strong back. That was freaking awesome.

 

8) Carrington is obviously a player who is listening to his coaches. He played well and that blocked pass was huge. How great is it to see the young defenders contribute? Carrington and Troup were brought along slowly, but it is starting to pay off. The Bills are a different team in 2011 if these guys turn out to be good players.

 

9) There is nothing at all not to like about David Nelson. And, it really is great to have a tall receiver with long arms.

 

10) Btw, I give Florence quite a bit of slack for the receptions he gave up to Brandon Marshall. The coverage wasn't so bad, and I have not really seen enough of Marshall to know just how good he is.

 

11) A big time shout out to Arthur Moats! He was literally all over the field, in addition to his 1.5 sacks.

 

12) Count me as sold on this coaching staff. The difference between this game and a Jauron win was the fact that this team went after their opponent and came away victorious, as opposed to laying back and waiting for a weak team to make a mistake.

 

13) Football depression? Mascochism? Self loathing perhaps? NOT this week.

Bill I agree on OT the question is do we need 1 or 2? I am still liking Bells progress at time. Miami game showed us we need better run blocking and need LB that can contain the edge. Still too many times we are getting caught for large gains. I still think our draft/FA focus needs to be on LBs, RT and possible a RG depending on Urbik recovery and if Wood is moved to center FT.

 

Couldnt agree more with the coaching staff, Edwards seemed a boy in a mans game but seems to be coaching well and making good adjustments. Cant say enough about the job Chan is doing overall and loved in the press conference how he pointed out the numerous mistakes by the OL.

 

Now lets get ready to beat the Pats since a win over them would be just like the win in 1980 over the Dolfins after a decade of failures

If there's a decent one available, I'm all for getting an OT in free-agency. We need an immediate upgrade at that position.

I thought it was RT, not LT, where we had problems. Wrotto and the False Start on 1st and goal from the 2 really made me angry. By contrast, I thought Bell held up well, and I especially liked it when he stuck up for his fellow lineman, and got punched in the face as a result, shook it off, and ran back to huddle. I'd love it if Bell proves that we can draft a project tackle this year, and spend our high picks on DL and LB. If not, then we need to get the best LT we can, and move Bell to RT.

I wish some reporter would ask if Moorman is being coached to not try to coffin corner people, and instead, is being told to force fair catches on the 15 with high punts.

I would add: it's also really great to have a guy who "gets it" regarding the team, and the big picture. Look at his press conference on the Bills site = class. I want us to extend this guy immediately. I see no point in waiting until after next season, when his value will be even higher.

And ditto regarding the excellent job Chan Gailey and staff are doing with this young team. The way Chan successfully develops QBs and employs an offensive game plan that distributes the ball evenly to all his offensive weapons reminds me quite a bit of

With regard to Whitner, I'm not seeing what you are. But I will say, he is great at making tackles after the first down is made.

Unless I am mistaken, Bill doesn't really see it either, he's just saying that because of having gone round and round about Whitner, with tools like myself, back when he was drafted.

 

Purely in terms of draft value(because we can't really know about leadership), Bill was right, and Whitner shouldn't have been drafted at #8.

 

Bill is merely dropping us a conciliatory "nod" because Bill is a good guy, and he's also a good Bills fan.

Spending a highish draft pick on the best OT available would not make me upset one bit. How about one journeyman OT and one high pick? Although I'd also be AOK with a high pick spent on the best LB/DE on the board.

 

I feel that starting QB is fixed. There is no need to pick a young QB unless the brain trust feels that the QB of the next decade is on the board. Fitz is one of the better QBs in the league, and he provers it behind a makeshift line and no running game and 7th round and undrafted WRs and no TE to speak of. No young QB could do what he's doing. None.

 

Whitner is probably gone after this year. I feel a little bad for him--he's a solid player but he's always been disliked because the Bills picked him too high. That's not his fault. Still, the Bills will be fine without him.

 

No comments on Spiller Bill? You must be too happy about the win. Again setting aside the fact that they Bills picked him and didn't need him, he is a guy with "flashes." A great punt return. A few bursting running plays. And also a lot of dancing in the backfield. The flashes make me hope that he can learn. At the same time, he doesn't get much to work with. Jackson is the better back and I will look to CJ's improvement next season.

 

Moorman had a bad game but came through on that bomb of a punt when it mattered at the end.

 

This team makes me hope that the 2011 season is not a lockout. I want to see the continued progression. They are on the right path.

Wow, yeah. They gotta build up the O-Line in the offseason. We can't go on like this having no rushing game. We need some big fast men on the OL to push around opposing defenses and open some holes up for Freddy and CJ. I'd say LT should be one of our top priorities. LB is still a big one there too. Right now I'd rank our weakest postions as

 

1. LB

2. LT

3. DE

4. TE

 

I'd say those are our Top 4 positions of Need. 1. We totally need to overhaul the LB core. Looks like Moats is a player, and I'd keep Poslouzny just for need. But we need 2 more starters at that position. 2. We need a LT we can count on. Someone who will be a rock for years to come. 3. We need a Pass rushing DE. Someone opposing OL will have to gameplan for. 4. TE is a valuable position which would add another dimension to our Offensive game plan. Make us more dangerous. Just getting about 5 quality players at these positions could turn us around quickly to the 9-7 range.

I'd burn a late round pick on Pitt DE Greg Romeus if he's still there in round 6 or 7 - guy was supposed to be a 1st round DE prospect until he decided to return for his senior year and tore his ACL. (Can't turn out any worse than last year's round 7 pick Kyle Calloway - or, for that matter, 2009's 1st round pick Aaron Maybin!)

Bill, your game analysis are always excellent. This one matches up with your weekly tradition.

 

Looking forward is certainly more useful than looking back but you got to cringe when evaluating the prior regime's second round selection of Hardy with Nix taking David Nelson as a free agent draftee. If you then follow that up with the comparison of the high first round selection of Maybin compared to the drafting of Moats in the sixth round you walk away muttering what-if.

 

To fairly make a judgment on any draft it takes a few years. But as the season advances and the young players earn more playing time this year's draft looks to be very productive.

I always read your posts Bill, sometimes I disagree with a few comments, but you really nailed it this week.

 

It is harder now to see where the OL is with the injuries we have. Bell given a solid offseason will be much improved next year; the kid has the natural talent, just needs a bit more strength. We defintaely need at least one starting tackle. If the best tackale available is an LT, move Bell, if it's and RT - then so be it and leave Bell. Wood's season has been a wash, but it will be interesting to see where he fits in best next year - is it RG or Center?

 

While Fitzpatrick is playing great, do I think he is our missing long-term answer at QB? No, but I just don't see what you gain by drafting a stud QB at the top of the draft next year or even how you justify doing it. If Luck somehow fell to us, I wouldn't pass him up. If Buddy likes one of the other QBs, do you let him wait in the wings for a couple years if Fitzy is still playing well?? If you don't take the QB and beef up the other areas of the team, when will our next chance at taking one be??? I'm torn over this...

 

I think everyone on the board knows where you stand with Whitner, while I am not opposed to extending him - he is NOT worth the amount of money he thinks he is worth. Yes whe was drafted at way too high of a lst and many good players were selected below him - it happens every draft to every team. Fact is he is an average saftey at best, but he is also a great team guy and it's great to have those types of players.

 

Our rookies such as Moats and Carrington, even Troupe to a degree - I didn't think they would amount to much. Especially seeing that they either weren't making much of an impact (Troupe)or dressing. I got too Jauronized into yeah we drafted the kid, but he can't play so he is inactive.

 

I wasn't thrilled with the hiring of Gailey, I found it a very uninspiring hire. Edwards (DC) up until the last few games I was ready to see him go away. This coaching staff had a plan going into the season, saw it wasn't working and made changes along the way and the team really has started to roll. Our younger players were brought along slowly and they are playing well.

 

I was one of the fans who after the 0-8 start wanted us to play competetive, but still lose for draft position. After these last few weeks and yesterday especially, it is more important for this team to learn how to win tough games and to be able to seal the win. We just have to have another good draft and add some mid-tier FAs.

 

I know you might not like to hear this, but I have a feeling that DBs will be drafted. McGee is getting old and banged up, McKelvin is spotty at best and consider Whitner gone...

I never blasted the 2010 draft, other than the selection of Spiller.

Nix has made a living for many years finding talented players. I am not worried about this aspect of his job as GM. What I do worry about is interference from "upstairs."

And to his credit, he brought us Gailey, with whom I am quite satisfied with as a head coach. Despite the southern drawl, there is something almost stately about him. I feel like he is really teaching his players.

 

I believe that Gailey and Nix know that the team needs to get better on both lines. They absolutely MUST know this. Levy/Jauron were primarily about defensive backs, special teams, and playing not to lose.

 

I have a feeling that if Mr. Wilson lets these men run the team (especially the draft), the Bills will soon be playoff contenders.
