Its hard to win in the NFL...(without John Elway)

Yeah, Shanahan also cut punter Hunter Smith after he botched a hold on a field goal attempt by Graham Gano. I don't know if they've had issues with special teams but I do know that the field goal attempt came in a pouring rain and that the snap was high.

When they shots of him on the sidelines, Shanahan's head looks like it's gonna explode.

This McNabb drama on top of the Haynesworth drama, and the poor performance of the offensive coordinator, Shanahan's son, Kyle…Yet another bad year in Redskins land.

The situation in DC just shows - you can't buy your way into a championship. Snyder just has not learned that you build through a solid front office, coaching and the draft.

Anyone still wish we'd hired Shanahan?

But this was the head coach we had to have! No Super Bowl without Shanny! (or Cowher) We were dooooomed, remember? The guy has two rings! He's an offensive genius! All I can say is thank you Mrs. Shanahan! Hope you enjoy the cherry blossoms when they bloom.

Not excusing Shanahan but he was given a much more volatile bomb than Gailey.

Gailey only had the task of turning around a franchise with no talent. Shanahan got handed a bunch of "Legends in their own minds" who arent producing.

I dont feel bad for Shanahan or Snyder. I actually love the fact that the Redskins suck again. For no other reason than they are the Bizarro Bills, and it's good to see that that way isnt working either.

At this point, Im much happier being a Bills fan than a Skins/Cowboys/Vikings fan.

I live in DC and nothing makes me happier (or almost nothing) than seeing the Skins continue to have major trouble!!

Go Bills!

Don't forget about Dallas too...Nice to see them suck-especially whne the Superbowl is in Dallas!

Shanny is dooshy.

Glad he went to that trainwreck in DC instead of BFLO.

By the way~Redskins owner Daniel Snyder is featured in some NFL Shop.com commercial.

Why on earth would you put someone like him in an ad to try to sell product...He's dooshy like Shanny too.

Are you aware that it was the owner and his organization who aggressively pursued him? So if you want to be critical of his pursuit then criticize the owner. I never wanted him in Buffalo because I thought he was not a good fit for this organization or owner. To declare MS a failure in his first year of a rebuilding situation is like declaring Chan Gailey, involved in his own rebuilding process, a failure because the Bills presently have three wins. Neither premature assessments would make sense, at least to me.

Both organizations reeked with major systemic dysfunction. There is no quick fix for either organization. It is simply going to take time to right the ship for both teams.

Yes it's true that Ralph inquired as to Shanny's interest. But the clamoring amongst Bills fans was quite loud. And that is what Promo was addressing.

There was a hysteria surrounding Shanahan and Cowher. That's the only word for it.

And though there are lots of people who think Shanny is the be-all, end-all of coaches, there were a few people on this board who were certain that Shanny would fail in Washington based on a close examination of his career. But I agree…it's premature to judge his work. Although the Bills seem to be trending up and the Redskins trending down.

The owner more than inquired about Shanny. Team reps flew to Colorado to pursue him. Right from the start he made it clear he wasn't interested in the job. He didn't come to Buffalo to look into the job situation-the reps went to him.

Of course there was a clamor for a big time football person to take over the flagging operation. That shouldn't be a surprise after the owner hired Levy and then the marketing specialist, Russ Brandon, to follow him with disasterous results.

I live in Maryland, a DC suburb. So I get a lot of coverage of the Skins. The Skins aren't trending down just as the Bills aren't trending down with a record worse than last year's. What is going on in both organizations is that the rebuilding process is underway. It is going to be messy and going to take time. Each roster is beng substantially purged in short order from the prior regimes' players.

I do agree with much of what you are saying. But where I slightly disagree with you is that this organization has made a lot of mistakes on its own with little influence coming from the noise of its rancorous fans.

as far as my most hated team in the nfl, skins are tied with the cowboys. good to see both of them tank the year

I was a big Shanahan fan but I think most people would agree that Gailey has gotten more out of his team than MS. At least, he made his wife happy.

You might be a little too close to the action, John. The Redskins are considered to be a mess right now. NFL.com even did a piece on it yesterday. Their big FA acquisition, Donovan McNabb, turned out to be a huge bust and they have no plan B at QB (Grossman? LMMFAO!) outside of having to draft one next year, and their scoring offense is ranked worse than it was last year. And Shanahan's move to the 3-4 alienated the already-diva-like Haynesworth and proved to be a disaster. Maybe things will look better next year (assuming there's a season), but with the Giants and Eagles being strong and usually splitting with Dallas, it's not looking good.

McNabb overrated (by many).

Andy Reid is showing that he can make any QB look good. Reid may be a bad game day coach be he preps n offense and QB better than you may see.

The 'Skins decade of mediocrity can be traced directly to the owner. This column (link below) does a good job of describing how the owner and his "Toys R Us" mentality has damaged the team: "In the last eight years the Redskins have traded away 22 draft picks for high-priced free agents, most of whom were busts." (in an tangential matter, I wish the Post has columnists as good as this, instead of Sully.)

In Shanahan's defense, however, I've come to the conclusion that the nearly season-long melodrama between Shanahan and Fat Albert Haynesworth really was not about Fat Albert. Rather, it was Shanahan's way of telling Danny Snyder to keep his nose out of personnel decisions. If that's the case, then I have to give props to Shanahan for giving a big F-you to the owner.

I'm actually much happier with Gailey. He may not have the talent here yet but you can see that he "gets it". He's a solid coach, a solid man, good play caller, his team is not fractured or dysfunctional. when players need to go, they're gone. They all seem to put out maximum effort for Chan. Now Shanahan has made some very weird decisions this year in DC. Also, Brian Schottenheimer is taking heat as well and he was not ready to be a head coach (so glad he turned the Bills down for an interview).
