MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The executive vice president of the NFL stood at the edge of snowy TCF Bank Stadium on Thursday and vowed that it will be the site of next week’s Vikings-Bears game despite concerns about player safety on its frozen field.

...

Despite an offer from the Indianapolis Colts to host the Monday night matchup at Lucas Oil Stadium, and concern from several members of the Chicago Bears, Grubman called football a "cold-weather sport" and noted that several other NFL teams including Buffalo and Kansas City play in outdoor stadiums with no heating systems to keep their fields warm.

...

"The NFL is cracking down on all this player safety and fining people $75,000, $50,000 for a hit because they want the game to be safer," Harris said. "I don't think it’s very safe to play on a frozen field."

Last time I checked, wasn't Soldier Field an outdoor stadium?

That sounds pretty cold

Maybe solider field has heat coils under the field to keep it nice and toasty

to dovetail on another thread, just watched most of the Lombardi documentary. They talk about how proud he was of his field, and the heating system he had to make sure the Lambeau field was in great shape. Day before the ice bowl game, field was great. However, when they took the tarp of the next day all the moistire that was trapped beneath the tarp began to freeze, hence the game was known as the Ive Bowl for more than the temps. The field was like a friggen skating rink. They said in the show Lombardi was pissed not cause the field was bad, but because he thought it would reflect on him as a failure!

So as head coach, he was responsible for building maintenance? The NFL really had a folksy feel back then.

That's it exactly. They talked about it on ATH. The UM field has no heating coils which means it would be like playing on concrete.

Minnesota is another type of cold though. Buffalonians go to Minnesota and complain about the cold, thats how cold it is there.

Buffalo gets a lot of snow, we don't get really cold. There are lots of places that get way colder than we do. We are near a large body of water which modifies our temperatures a lot more than areas surrounded by land. Water cools in the summer and heats in the winter, which is why places near the lake are always cooler than surrounding areas in the summer and warmer than surrounding areas in the winter...

yeah. Like -5 temp without the windchill factor which feels like -30. Minnesota in the winter sucks.
