Man, technology is so cool! It will not be soon until the Eraser movie was right and there are portable units soldiers will carry! Though, it will probably give you a pretty sore shoulder on the recoil!

Well, that part's right. The Navy isn't developing anything for soldiers to carry and fire.

The thrust of the article was this new rail gun is only half the strength of what it eventually hopes to achieve.

They're developing this for naval ordinance - to potentially hit targets 200 miles away.

That's GREAT...IF... we're allowed to use it!

Should the technology for the development of this weapon be kept secret or should we share it with our enemies? <_<

Yes of course we should. We are all one world. Or if China comes up with enough cash to buy it. Or maybe they will forgive some of the debt for it

I lauged out loud.

Eventually, the technology will leak, that is just the way it goes. If you are the source for that sharing than you should be held accountable and if you are an American then that is treason.

Considering that you'd have to direct a ship's ENTIRE power output to the capacitors for ten minutes to charge the gun for one shot...by all means, share it.

You can sink a hell of a lot of motionless and defenseless ships in ten minutes.

A gun that shoots six shots an hour...and the original plan was to start deploying it with the Zumwalt-class DDGs in 2012.:wallbash:

Where did you get that figure? I thought it was supposed to be speced out for 6 a minute or some such. Is that based off the power plant?

With those kind of power requirements, the Navy may have to replace the power systems with nuclear reactors.

I calculated it.

I also dropped a factor of 1000 in my shp-megawatt conversion. Oops.

So, if a portable unit were to ever come, say 1/10 the power, how much juice would it need? You know, like in the movies? Would you need a VW bus behind it for power?
