C.Biscuit97 Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 I never really thought about it before, but why doesn't the NFL have the lottery for the draft? For those not familiar with the NBA/NHL model, here's a quick breakdown: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Draft_Lottery Basically, all the playoff teams get slotted and the non-playoff teams get weighed based on their finish. As of 2008, with 30 NBA teams, 16 qualify for the playoffs and the remaining 14 teams are entered in the draft lottery. These 14 teams are ranked in reverse order of their regular season record and are assigned the following number of chances250 combinations, 25.0% chance of receiving the #1 pick 199 combinations, 19.9% chance 156 combinations, 15.6% chance 119 combinations, 11.9% chance 88 combinations, 8.8% chance 63 combinations, 6.3% chance 43 combinations, 4.3% chance 28 combinations, 2.8% chance 17 combinations, 1.7% chance 11 combinations, 1.1% chance 8 combinations, 0.8% chance 7 combinations, 0.7% chance 6 combinations, 0.6% chance 5 combinations, 0.5% chance The NBA created this to stop teams from tanking their seasons just to get rewarded with a top pick. Now I know the NFL has non-guaranteed contracts and football isn't a game you can half-@ss, but it sure looks like Carolina is tanking their season. Why should the Bills get penalized because their team has heart and doesn't throw in the towel? Additionally, we know how much the NFL loves making money. This would be another event they could sell. If the Bills finish 5-11 and still have a chance to get the #1 pick, who here won't watch the lottery? It'd be awesome. So if anyone has any pull with the league, please get the lottery system for the NFL. Thanks.
SouthernMan Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 The BIG difference is that in the NBA you could conceiveably build the entire starting lineup with 5 seasons. Not only that, the difference between college hoops and the pros is minimal compared to the college-pro transition in football. In other words, you don't usually have the same breaking in period. In the NFL, there are 22 starters, not counting specialists. Not really an apple to apples argument.
billsfan89 Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 NHL system is a lot better (For the NFL) if you finish with the worst record you have a 50% chance of getting the top pick and can't finish worse then the 2nd pick. I think the NFL's system works well enough without a lottery its hard to tank a season when there is only 16 games in it.
AReed Deep For 7 Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 i like it. it wouldnt make it worthwhile to blow games late in the season for the cellar dwellers. and that would mean those teams could still focus on building themselves up. as much as i want the bills to have a high draft there is no substitue for getting the taste of a "W" in their mouth. developing a winning attitude is going to build a team up much faster than bringing in ungroomed talent.
machinegun12 Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 It's an interesting theory. I personally believe that teams don't intentionally play to lose, players are very competitive and are essentially playing for their careers each and every game (excluding a handful of superstars). A lottery draft would certainly erase any doubt about that, I guess. My problem would be a team like New England a few years ago who just missed the playoffs although they had an 11-5 record (the year Cassell played). Could you imagine the outcry if they defied the odds and got the #1 pick in the draft that year? (they certainly would not have drafted Stafford, but could have picked up Tyson Jackson from LSU or traded for a bunch of picks like they're known to do...) Maybe if you did it with the 8 or 10 worst teams from that year or something.

But in the NBA teams were clearly tanking, and sitting thier vets in order to get a higher draft pick on a very large scale. It wasn't 1 Carolina it was 10 Carolinas. Some think the Cavs still tanked even with a lottery in place to get more balls for LeBron. 1/5 starters make a huge difference in the NBA. 1/22 starters don't make as big as a difference in the NFL. Plus essentially Its almost the same odds you draft a HOFer and #2 as #6 so its not really a huge incentive for teams Unless they believe there is a 1 in every 10 or 20 year player, (Like Andrew Luck) then its even a crapshoot if he declares. Overall tanking is not really prevalent in the NFL I also wouldn't say that Carolina is tanking. They have lost 3 starting QBs and 3 Starting RBs. Its hard to win when you're playing dudes off the street at those two important positions. # of NFL Hall of Famers picked at each draft position in the top 11: #1 Picks - 11 #2 Picks - 8 #3 Picks - 9 #4 Picks - 9 #5 Picks - 6 #6 Picks - 10 #7 PIcks - 1 #8 Picks - 4 #9 Picks - 3 #10 Picks - 2 #11 Picks - 5 Edited November 22, 2010 by Why So Serious?
