ExiledInIllinois Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 ...And I my Robert Frost: Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
Peace Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 (edited) And you wonder why our politicians and system is in the abyss. I think people are forgetting what "citizenship" means. Considering Rand's upbringing no wonder it was lost on her. So her USSR upbringing made her not appreciate her US citizenship? What kind of convoluted logic is that? She came here and loved this country in a way that most US citizens could never appreciate because of the nightmare she left behind. The freedom from the oppressive government and socialist system she grew up in formed her love of the USA and her political system that was based on the premise: You have no right to be in my business unless I'm infringing your right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. From a political POV, that is 100% spot on. Get your (the government's) hands out of my pocket. Keep your eyes out of my bedroom. In general, mind your !@#$ing very limited business. Dante Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 (edited) Grew up in a family business of some size(over 200 employees) in Southern Ontario and saw first hand how Provincial, Federal and city governments treat business as a cash cow to be milked, extorted for money. For what? To fund they're over abused social programs. To fund overpaid government workers including the ridiculously powerful teachers union. Fuggin glorified babysitters. Instead of giving some sort of credit for keeping over 200 or so families supported and maybe helping a bit all they could/can do is figure out how to get more money out of you. Not the only thing that shaped my political leanings but certainly a significant one causing me to have no use for left leanings and the people that try to inflict such BS on everyone. Considering Rand's upbringing no wonder it was lost on her. To be fair, those are lyrics to the Rush song Anthem. They aren't Ayn Rand's own words but they are clearly based on her philosophy. Know your place in life is where you want to be, Don't let them tell you that you owe it all to me. Keep on looking forward; no use in looking 'round; Hold your head above the ground and they won't bring you down. Anthem of the heart and anthem of the mind A funeral dirge for eyes gone blind We marvel after those who sought The wonders of the world, wonders of the world, Wonders of the world they wrought. Live for yourself -- there's no one else More worth living for Begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry out for more Well, I know they've always told you Selfishness was wrong Yet it was for me, not you, I came to write this song

And he caught a lot of **** for it, too..and struggled internally with it as well. Was actually jamming to this song this AM on the commute to work. Live Version off of ATWAS. Heres some early Rush.....Pre-first album.... At the 1:25 mark, crank the volume and strap in.

....lybob Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Was there supposed to be a link or something? find it yourself - don't you get the Rand philosophy.
IDBillzFan Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I think people are forgetting what "citizenship" means. I guess that depends on how you define it, which would be how?
Chef Jim Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I guess that depends on how you define it, which would be how? An altruistic hypocrite.
IDBillzFan Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 An altruistic hypocrite. Yeah, I get that. But I mean specifically. What individual acts constitute "citizenship." Picking up trash at the park? Feeding the homeless? Helping someone stricken with an unexpected, life-changing event pay their bills? Fix their house? Have a place to sleep? Maybe it's helping the elderly. Building homes for the needy. Adopting a stray pet? What, precisely, is the "citizenship" that he feels is missing?
/dev/null Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 I'm a simple bumkin from the part of Pennsylvania not called Philadelphia or Pittsburgh where we cling to our guns and religion

/dev/null Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 In other words, you are a victim of your statistic. Everyone around you believed a certain way, and so did you. Yeah, I grew up in a city with like a 3-1 Democrat to Republican party affiliation
drnykterstein Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 Yeah, I grew up in a city with like a 3-1 Democrat to Republican party affiliation A town with a 3:1 Dem/Repub ratio clings to their guns and religion? Interesting, and a bit abnormal.

I'd invite you to do some research, but I doubt Huffington Post and Media Matters could locate the city of Erie on a map of Pennsylvania with a big fat arrow pointing towards Lake Erie. Nor do I expect that you could without your masters
