drinkTHEkoolaid Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 This is a bit of a vague topic so feel free to run with it, but I don't think we have really ever had a thread specifically on this topic, so... What has shaped your political beliefs to where you are today? Were there any events in your life, family, friends, realizations, experiences that has lead you to your sets of beliefs now?

RkFast Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 (edited) 9/11 The thought progression goes from there, but that was the start of it all for me. Edited November 19, 2010 by RkFast
ExiledInIllinois Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Citizenship: Looking out for other's needs first over one's self interest.
3rdnlng Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Growing up as one of nine children. Father had his own business or a good job, but if I wanted anything other than the basics, I had to earn the money for them. Absolutely thankful for that. Wouldn't want it any other way.
pBills Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Being raised by great parents (mother coming to this country when she was little) who worked their butts off for GM so that my brother and I could go to college. They made sure that we understood why we HAD to have great work ethics and always continue our education. All of that being said, I truly believe that Republicans could give two craps about the middle-class or lower and that for years neither party knows how to work with the other. Things need to change.
Peace Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 If my political beliefs are a stew, the broth is Ayn Rand. But being intractable as her is impractical so the rest are pieces of compromise learned over time. (And still learning.) BTW, my political beliefs attributed to her is one thing. Her personal philosophy of selfishness is something I can't relate to in any way.
IDBillzFan Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I was a liberal until I examined my first paycheck.

Anthem Live for yourself...there's no one else More worth living for Begging hands and bleeding hearts will only cry out for more Well, I know they've always told you Selfishness was wrong Yet it was for me, not you, I came to write this song
Gene Frenkle Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Her personal philosophy of selfishness is something I can't relate to in any way. You wouldn't make for a very good Conservative or Libertarian then.
RkFast Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 You wouldn't make for a very good Conservative or Libertarian then. Youre clueless.
Gene Frenkle Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Youre clueless. You're still having trouble with your contractions.
Heels20X6 Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I believe in the value of a dollar earned. I believe in personal accountability and I also believe that as humans we need to look out for each other and foster the values of community.
The Avenger Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Getting out of upstate NY and realizing everyday that not everyone had an upbringing similar to mine - doesn't make them bad people, just people with different expereinces. If you see the same old stuff every single day you get no appreciation for how big and broad life really is.
Peace Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 You wouldn't make for a very good Conservative or Libertarian then. You don't know what you're talking about. Again.
Magox Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 You wouldn't make for a very good Conservative or Libertarian then. Ooops YOu gotta hate those lil pesky things called facts.
ExiledInIllinois Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 A colander. Don;t you mean: baker's sieve.

I think people are forgetting what "citizenship" means. Considering Rand's upbringing no wonder it was lost on her.
