so about every 6 months i turn a big bag of collected change into an amazon gift card and use it buying music. i'm searching for new or somewhat obscure female vocalists and have had some success but looking for more ideas. especially like jazz but into almost any genre (country, bluegrass, alternative, latin, soul, rock, classical...) it just needs to convey emotions and come from the heart. of course, a great and/or interesting voice helps too. any recommendations?

Look at Lauren Gifford.

Lavay Smith is a terrific swing jazz vocalist and has the best swing band in the country (The Red Hot Skillet Lickers) backing her.

I recommend either One Hour Mama or Everybody's Talkin' Bout Miss Thing.

Here latest, Miss Smith To You, isn't bad, but I find the song selection a bit trite.

Another you might like is Holly Cole. I was turned on to her just a few years ago (by LA Bills Fan, maybe?). I haven't heard a lot of her stuff, but like what I have heard quite a bit.

A friend of mines' wife...Kelly Willis. She was kind of "bubbling under" in mainstream country in the early 90's, but has too much itegrity for that kind of thing...she puts out a record every few years at this point...great singer:

Very nice.

I know she's not really "lesser known", but I'll take any excuse to pimp Emmylou Harris. Here's a classic with The Band:

No apologies needed...I have been on an Emmylou Harris jag for a few weeks now...I can't say that I like her Daniel Lanois period stuff as much, although it is her most critically acclaimed...I think Lanois sucked the life out of her music. I love the early stuff, right up through the late 80's. Just got finished reading "Hickory Wind", the Gram Parsons bio, and it made me want to go back and listen to their duet stuff...high lonesome for sure!

Like another prefaced...u said lesser known, but Amy winehouse is known more for her behavior and her 'hit' single...she has an amazing voice

If you like Amy Winehouse, you may like the Detroit Cobras. Singer Rachel Nagy has a great rock 'n' roll/r&b voice...comes along with some of the same antics as AW I am afraid...but their albums kick ass, especially the first two! High enery...
