Unless they had a trademarked name. For example, if there was a restaurant or bar called "Dallas Cowboys Watering Hole", the owner could buy it and would be protected by the Anti-Cybersquatting Act. The owner would then be free to do what he wants with the domain name.

Nope. That owner could only buy "dallascowboyswateringhole.com.

Could someone else purchase the domain prior to Boys renewing?

 

If yes, would have been great and profitable to buy and direct at the Bills site.

That would be funny but the Peter Pan site would be better.

domains (website URLs) go through a process after they expire where the previous owner has a time period where they can renew it. Much like after a season in most sports, a team has time to exclusively deal with players whose contract has run out before they hit free agency.
