theesir Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 I know he had a calf injury that cause San Diego to put him on IR. Is there any article that even says he has recovered at this point?

truth on hold Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 Merrimans career is going much like the Boz's: get roided up in college, make up a character for yourself, have a goofy haircut, have a couple decent years in the pros, get off roids, get injured, have a shortened, largely forgettable career

Heitz Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 *If* he's healthy I think he can do some damage on our D - he HAS to be one of the best players on this stellar D, definitely the best pass rusher. Hopefully they'll get him on the field and send him after the QB ASAP, we need to get some pressure to win anything this year...
Big Turk Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 (edited) Merrimans career is going much like the Boz's: get roided up in college, make up a character for yourself, have a goofy haircut, have a couple decent years in the pros, get off roids, get injured, have a shortened, largely forgettable career 39.5 sacks in 42 games in his first 3 years is decent? Please...the dude was an all-pro including 17 sacks in 12 games one year... Boz did comparatively nothing in comparison... Now, whether he will regain his old form or not is questionable(doubtful in my opinion), but to say his first few years were "decent" is a joke... Edited November 4, 2010 by matter2003
Punch Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 (edited) It's possible Merriman contributes just as much as Marcus Jones and Jason Gildon did for the Bills once upon a time--- remember those names? But it's definitely worth a shot. One thing that is odd about all of this is Chan Gailey's response in the afternoon pres conference. According to Joe Buscaglia, Gailey didn't recall coaching against Merriman when he was at Georgia Tech and Merriman was at Maryland. Gailey thought he was already gone by the time he took over at GT, although their respective tenures overlapped from 2002-05, and Merriman was pretty effective against the Yellow Jackets. He very well could have been intentionally coy because he didn't want to let on the Bills were discussing it internally, but it's odd nonetheless. http://www.wgr550.com/BUSCAGLIA--How-Does-Merriman-Fit-Bills-/8498682 Edited November 4, 2010 by Punch

NoSaint Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 who cares if hes healthy? perhaps Merriman can share his steroids connect with Maybin.........just a thought... I saw maybin put on 25 lbs of muscle in 7 weeks pre-testing at the combine. I think he might know a guy.

"a couple decent years". Try all pro every year from your rookie year until a major knee injury you try to play through (dumbly) instead of getting surgery early, and some other related injuries coming back from that. He is 26, and when he gets healthy will be very good for some team. I doubt that will be this year and that the team will be the Bills, but right now he is better than what we have, and if he does well we can trade him to a contender or just enjoy the part year performance. If he doesn't, he is still an improvement and Ralph is out a few bucks.
Punch Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 When did the 'Donger ever play for Buffalo? Marcus Jones and Jason Gildon were both brought in for tryouts during training camp but didn't make the roster. They were both touted as being the potential pass rush specialists to push our defense over the top but were bogged down by persistent injuries and were out of the league soon thereafter. IIRC, they were both brought in during Gregg Williams' tenure.
Rayzer32 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Merriman has a bum leg, but even if he had no arms he is still the best defensive player outside of the DBs on this team by a mile.
Hplarrm Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 There really only two questions: 1, Is he better than what we got? 2. Can Mr. Ralph and the salary cap afford him? The answers: 1. A better LB than the current Bills roster is a pretty low bar and since Merrimen must pass a physical before he is cut the answer is YES. The other issue which goes along with the straight player assessment is team building so his personality at least needs to be acceptable (this is why you do not pick-up Moss unless he makes a playoff difference for your team or if having him around interferes with the development of a youngster (unfortunately not a prob for us). 2/ Can your owner and the salary cap of your affod this? The answer seems to be YES to both questions,

Was Merriman that highly-regard at Maryland? I really don't know, but since Gailey has forgotten more football than we can all remember combined, then I wouldn't be surprised if he simply didn't recall coaching against him. Steely Dan Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Link Shawne Merriman | # | OLB Buffalo Bills | Official Team Site Height: 6-4 Weight: 265 Age: 26 Born: 5/25/1984 Washington , DC College: Maryland Experience: 6th season High School: Frederick Douglass HS [upper Marlboro, MD] If he can return to previous form then this is a lucky break for Buffalo. Especially if they can work out a long term contract on him. If he can stay healthy and get a long term contract this will be a fantastic stroke of luck.
Chandler#81 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 You can't compare Boz to Merriman because Merriman has actually produced in his career. Merriman has the talent that Bozworth NEVER had. Well, actually, he can post whatever he wants on an internet forum -within mod rules. It's up to us, the readers of his spew, to discern fact from fiction. Boz never had a season in competitive football remotely resembling 'Lights Out's' first few years @ SD. Discern.
