Buffalo Barbarian Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 (edited) I didn't watch collage football when Bruce Smith was drafted (had pro wrestling to watch, I was young) but was he the obvious overall choice or where there "better" prospects available? The Reason I ask is Adrian Clayborn is ranked #1 one on many draft boards and am wondering if he is comparable to Bruce? I saw him play Saturday and thought he was pretty good but I wasn't blown away like I was with with Ndamakong Suh? Edited October 25, 2010 by Buffalo Barbarian
Punch Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 I think the only other possibility in '85 was Doug Flutie, as far as a no. 1 overall. But I was a kid too, and more interested in Rowdy Roddy Piper, myself. For what it's worth, here's what one draft site has to say about Clayborn from this past weekend against Gabe Carimi. They don't seem to think he'd be much of a pass rusher at the NFL level. http://nflmocks.com/2010/10/24/gabe-carimi-vs-adrian-clayborn/

b stein 22 Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 (edited) I think Cameron Heyward is most comparable to Bruce look at his 360 move. He might take plays off put this guy is a beast. He is fast and big. Very Bruce Smith like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inKtdfodCak'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inKtdfodCak Clayborn gets pushed back a lot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inKtdfodCak Edited October 25, 2010 by b stein 22
Punch Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 I like Cameron "Ironhead Jr." Heyward, the most so far anyway. He looks like a beast, but I'm certainly no expert. I also like Robert Quinn out of North Carolina, but he's been permanently suspended from the NCAA so he'll be out for the year. There's speculation that he may drop to the 2nd round. I couldn't argue with those two.
Ghost of Rob Johnson Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 According to this site there is Marcell Darious and Robert Quinn also at the top of the draft board.http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2011.php

I actually was thinking about this, too, since it's been 25 years since our last number one. As somebody mentioned, Flutie was the Heisman Trophy winner, and we had no QB, so he was talked about a lot. But, then he signed with the USFL, so he was no longer in the picture by draft day. The way I remember it is that it really came down to Bruce or Ray Childress, who had a good career himself, and I believe went number two. The thing that looking back is hard to understand is how they would know Bruce was such a lock. He was overweight and did not take care of himself. He started to really work out and watch his weight in 86/87 and then just took off and became the incredible player that he was for many years.
JPS Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 After Golston and Maybin, am I wrong to be nnnnervous about drafting a Big Ten pass rusher? That being said, I don't think there's a clear cut #1 guy coming out and trying to figure who the Bills will take is impossible at this point. As the they've only played 6 games, they do not know what their needs are. You just don't know who might emerge as a player yet...or who might blow out a knee. I know draft talk is fun and I spend WAY more time on walterfootball.com than anyone should, but this draft chatter will prob seem almost funny at draft time it is so off base. I hope they take someone who justifiably sells a lot of jerseys and I don't care what position he plays.
