How about Chicago?

 

I dont particularly care for them, however they were making jazz-influenced rock well before that was cool. Their forst album came out in 1969, right around the time groups like Hendrix, Santana, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppeling were busting out. The early Chicago had a lot of hits including 25 or 6 to 4, Saturday in the Park, Make Me Smile and Colour My World. They kept making hits in their later years too, although they were more of a soft rock ballad like If You Leave Me Now and Hard to Say I'm Sorry.

 

I'd say this band had a significant influence on other rock bands, by successfully combining rock with some jazz influence and instrumentation.

 

Given the volume of hit music, the length they did and their influence on rock music in general, I'd say they're a worthy candidate for "Most Under Rated Band."

Blood Sweat and Tears was the better and more influential band, for jazz-horn influenced rock, IMO. Chicago had a few good tunes, but by and large were pretty lame, IMO. BS&T kicked ass.

Certainly not underrated, as I think they're new, but I wanted to share that I heard a song I loved on the radio the other day called "Little Lion Man". I'm sure you've heard it referred to as "Didn't I my dear". So I youtubed some of their other stuff. Just excellent. The Band is Mumford and Sons. Give a listen, I just DLed the whole album on iTunes for 9.99. Winter Winds and The Cave are excellent.

I saw these guys live for the first time during the mid 90's on the HORDE tour at Darien Lake. The Dave Matthews Band opened for them at the time. A must see live act if they come through your neck of the woods.

Umphrey's McGee. I think. I've been familiar with the name for years since I've been into the jam band thing. I never looked any of their stuff up. I think I had an issue with the name. Hmmm, maybe I was wrong in that other thread. Anyway I've been looking their stuff up this past week and I still a bit out. There's a lot of stuff going on in their music which sometimes is good, sometimes too much. I've only looked at their live videos because that's all I pretty much listen to now and their light shows are to say the least chaotic. I do like that live especially with a good buzz and a good light set up. But here's a link to them live. Thoughts?

I'd have to say Brand New. First off, every album has a different sound and feel. Their first cd (Your Favorite Weapon) was pop-punk; The second (Deja Entendu) was more emo than anything; The third release (The Devil and God*) was and still remains one of my favorite records; The fourth album (Daisy) is also up there with some of the better music ive heard come out recently. The third albums demos got leaked which was a bummer because they changed all of the songs and wrote new ones instead of finishing what they had already recorded. Still those demos are better than what most bands in the "indie" genre could release with their best efforts.

Agreed, Guitars are great, sometimes their drums are a little over produced, but one of my favs when im listening to metal-ish

I like the music (instrumental portion) quite a bit. I'm not so crazy about the vocals. I'm guessing they would sound great in person, though.

 

One thing that turned me off a bit was the cheesy "get the audience to clap" shtick. That seems a bit out of place for a band like this.

I'm not crazy about the vocals either. As I've mentioned I'm a big moe. fan and they're very similar. I wasn't crazy about moe's vocals early on either either but when you're talking about a jam band their shows oftentimes have 30-40 minutes of non-stop jams with very little vocals. So yes the live shows are great. I'll be seeing Umphrey's in the spring. They're playing the Fillmore so I'll let you know then.

Umphrey's McGee is awesome, as are the Disco Biscuits..both are in the jam scene and while not your typical Allman Bros, Zappa, Dead Jam style, they incorporate more electronica or trance into their style of Jam(both styles I am not a fan of at all, but I love both Umphrey and the Biscuits).

 

If you want to hear something cool check out the collaboration of Umphrey & Biscuits, they do a couple of sets billed as Brain Damaged Eggmen, and they do a Beatles set and a Floyd set. Both pretty fun to listen to.

Resurrecting this thread for a great band out of Bloomington, Indiana: Murder By Death

 

From their Wiki:

Murder by Death plays a range of music including instrumentals, rock and alt-country. The band uses electric cello to create a southern American, gothic sound with occasional western references.

 

The band occasionally arranges themes such as zombies, whiskey and the Devil into concept albums. For example, the band's second album, Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them?, describes a story in which the Devil wages war against a small village in Mexico.

 

My favorite album is In Bocca al Lupo from 2006.
