There is a site I freequent full of anonymous people who post various things. One thread was discussed on this, and while it is anonymous you can argue that it cannot be taken seriously, but I had read similar stories on this. The thread was workplace secrets and they're always fun.

The high dollar prize pieces are distributed directly to McD's corporate from the printer. These pieces are printed in a highly secure area, than the suits distribute these themselves various stores randomly without warning. They will walk in and are usually noticable, in suits often with a camera crew in a van parked in the lot. They walk in and will strategically drop the pieces in to the rotation randomly within 2 minutes of arrival to keep employees from alerting friends to come in and buy things. If you remember a few years ago the issue was that employees would get family members and friends to come in and buy items while the suits were in and that can still be done. They get it right out there faster now to avoid this but it is still possible. It's all a work.
