Maybin has been, by all accounts, invisible thus far on the Buffalo Bills. But I think a lot of people (scouts, coaches) knew this was the case when he entered the draft. I question why we would have made this pick in the draft since we had supposedly already gone through rebuilding with Jauron and Levy. But that is in the past and we can't change it.

Here are the most important quotes I took from what scouts said about Maybin:

1. "Maybin came out of high school weighing only 220 pounds, but has already added 26 pounds of muscle. He has the frame to add more bulk without losing any speed, which is something NFL scouts will be looking at."

2. "Maybin took full advantage of his starting role this season, having tallied 49 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and even breaking up 3 passes in coverage."

3. "Maybin will likely be one of the top defensive end taken this spring, but NFL teams will likely have to wait for him to develop. He can help a team as a third down pass rush specialist in the beginning, but if he reaches his potential he could be a future NFL sacks leader."

Hold off on the criticism. I actually think he could be used more effectively than he is RIGHT NOW, and Edwards isn't putting him in those situations. And I also think he needs to add some bulk to his frame in order to not get pushed around by larger tackles. It would be very foolish to trade away / cut last years 1st rounder just yet. Be patient.

Can you define "beginning"?

Our LB's our the worst in the league I think everyone agrees with that and he still can't get on the field. Which is a joke for Chan when the D is giving up 40 what's the worst he could do ?

I wonder what the same scouts said about Brian Orakpo or Clay Mathews... we played the if/come card with maybin and lost...face it, it was anot a gamble worth taking at the time...2nd round or late 1, perhaps...

I honestly do question our defensive coaching. We have only 2 sacks from defensive lineman. And we have ZERO interceptions this year. Our guys constantly look lost in their assignments on game day, and opposing offenses are eating us alive.

- Why are the 3-4 outside linebackers constantly in a FOUR-POINT stance???? Maybin, Coleman, Ellis, and Kelsay should all be standing in a two-point stance as pass rushers. Especially when you have a speedy guy like Maybin. He can't take offensive tackles on head-to-head, but he can beat them around the edge when lined up wide.

- Why not rush more guys and ask our corners like McKelvin and McGee to play man coverage? We have the secondary to do this. We can get a lot more pressure on opposing QB's, but we refuse to do it.

Lots of questions with this team this year. But the defense was supposed to be a lot better than they are. It's really disappointing.

He is so young for an NFL player that his body has not yet gotten up to speed, physically. It's the only reason I'm holding out hope, at this point. His maturity is an issue, however, and I'm not thinking so much about off the field stuff. His propensity to ignore his responsibilities in the run game and pass coverage and not properly read the QB is something that may improve over time but it's also possible he's just not capable of it. It's not unlike a QB that cannot read defenses.

Considering the need to be patient with so many other facets of this team, Maybin has the time to prove one way or another if he can grow into an NFL player.

Wood should now ask Kelsay to give back the money.

Right now Spiller couldn't block Kelsay or Maybin does that make him a bust?

You don't waste 1st round picks on project players! These days your 1st rounders should be fighting for starting positions or even starting, not waiting to see what they do 3 or 4 years from now.

Some Scouts like Todd McShay loved Maybin...They got enamored with his 1st step and assumed he would fill out in time and become a monster...Others like Mike Mayock had SERIOUS, and I mean SERIOUS reservations on whether or not the Kid could ever stand up vs. the Run in the NFL...

Taking a situational Pass Rusher with the #11 overall Pick is a joke...And at this point, say what you will about this supposed developmental time that he still needs, Maybin looks like a Part-time player at best...Watch him on the Field...He's NOT a natural...He's just not...There are guys who came into the NFL with lean builds who are naturals...Jason Taylor and DeMarcus Ware are two that come to mind immediately...Clay Matthews weighed 240 at the Combine...Brian Cushing weighed 243...Maybin weighed 249 at the Combine...Maybin is simply not in the league of these other guys as a football player...He's just not that good or instinctive...He's just not...The weight thing and body-type are all just excuses for the fact that he basically has no idea what he's doing out there...Right now, he's just not very good and no where near where the #11 overall pick should be...

I agree that dumping or trading Maybin now is not a good idea...But lets not get carried away with the promise of a new day with this Kid...If he was better he would be making plays...Until he starts doing that I don't see how it matters what any Scout said about him before he was Drafted...Scouts are wrong all the time...And as of right now the Bills were dead wrong to Draft Maybin...No getting around it... B-)

Let me just copy what I said earlier in this thread...

"- Why are the 3-4 outside linebackers constantly in a FOUR-POINT stance???? Maybin, Coleman, Ellis, and Kelsay should all be standing in a TWO-POINT stance as pass rushers. Especially when you have a speedy guy like Maybin. He can't take offensive tackles on head-to-head, but he can beat them around the edge when lined up wide."

I don't think Edwards or Sanders know what they're doing with this defense. Maybin looks pathetic running into offensive lines head-to-head, but he could be much more effective in a two-point stance running around the edge with space to move. It's beyond stupid watching this crap go on out there.

Edwards should get him JP's # so that right now he can clean the streets of Buffalo. That's the most efficient way to use Maybin.

I think the one plus for Maybin is that he is so young. He is only like 21 yrs old and has a lot of growing and maturing to do naturally. You would like to see some flashes but overall he still looks lost and overmatched.

That may be...But I'm guessing no matter what stance you put them in a better football player will find a way to make plays...You're giving Maybin credit he does not deserve at this point...He basically makes zero plays...Nothing...Notta...Gotta be more than the stance Bro...

And go ahead and stand him up over there and watch how Teams Run right at him...That's what they will do I 100% guarantee it...And it may very well be the reason they line him up the way they do...The Kid can't play the Run...His Head Coach has already told us that and the HC before him seemingly agreed...If he can't get leverage in a 3-point stance how is he going to get any standing up? Just saying...

Look if you want to say give him some time I'm OK with that...But blaming Coaches?...I don't know...Coaches who have had at least some success Coaching OLB's in a 3-4 suddenly can't Coach this Kid? I'm not buying into it...He's just not that good yet... B-)

When he calls Edwards for the number he should also ask if he can have his gloves for inspection time. Mary won't need them any more in the warm weather on the bench.

I'm still dumbfounded by the Kelsay at 6 per thing.

Can anyone recall the last time Kelsay made a play that impacted a game? I'm thinking it was two years ago in the MNF game vs the cowboys.

Someone tell me I'm missing something.

I don't want to give Maybin any credit, because he doesn't deserve any. But he does deserve a little time.

And regarding Edwards, from everything I've read and heard about the guy, he is a great technique guy and a teacher. But he doesn't scheme well and plays a vanilla defense that opposing offenses find easy to read. This was from back in his Washington defensive coordinator days.

I am in full agreement with everything you mentioned! Why line him headup on tackles on 3rd down when his strength is his 1st step and speed? He needs to be standing up like LT ready to attack around the corner. In addition, Florence and McKlevin play better man-to-man press coverage than zone; so why not man up more! What frustates me the most is that week after week, year after year, the opposition always seems to find a way to scheme to and bring unblock bliztses against our QB's but yet we never give it in return. The only time we came close was when we used the standup creep defense a few years back but mysteriously stop utilizing it. We play too safe and soft on D to beat any good team.

To me the issue of will Maybin eventually be good given the time to develop or not is secondary to the big WTF of why was he even picked at all. It should have been obvious to anyone, even someone who wasn't a scout, that he was a project pick for the NFL just based on his age and size alone.

The problem is that the Bills could not afford to waste such a high pick on someone who might be good someday. The team doesn't have that luxury because they need immediate impact players now. Not sure who was responsible ultimately for this pick but whoever is was has to be the worst personnel evaluator in the entire NFL.
