Sisyphean Bills Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 He was 19 last year and is now 22 years old? So it's 2012 now? Was there a lockout in 2011? Is Ralph still alive? I must have fallen asleep. I thought he was in grade school last year.
JohnC Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 I watched AM many times in summer camp and was impressed with his jump and speed off the line. That quickly got tempered by how easily our bad tackles manhandled him. He's a speciman but just not a football player. He tries but I don't think he gets the game. All in all, this could rank as one of the worst of our #1 picks. I cringed when they made the pick when there was so much talent on the board to choose from. But we can't look back and I have no idea how long we give the guy a chance to improve. The Bills scouting department under Modrak has fallen into the trap of being impressed with a player's measurables instead of focusing on the fundamental issue: is the player a good football player. The same failed scenario happened when the Bills drafted Eric Flowers. He was a tweener player, similar to Maybin, who after being tested at the combine and at workout sessions had very impressive times and tests. I remember reading that Flowers was flying up the draft board. The impetus for the jump in rating had nothing to do with how he performed on the field of play, it was based on his times, jumping ability etc. Maybin was not an easy person to evaluate based on his very short college career. He started only for a year. He prematurely got playing time by Paterno because two linemen got suspended. He got a lot of sacks but that was due to his ability to speed rush up the gap. Even then at Penn St.there was no versatility to his game. One of the biggest draft failures in the history of the NFL was the drafting of Mike Mamula by the Eagles. Mamula was a DL/DE/OLB who was a workout warrior at the combine. He was an above average college player who, based on his combine performance, skyrocketed up the Eagles' draft board. Tom Modrak was also involved in that fiasco. Tom Modrak claims that he rated Cushing higher than Maybin and that Jauron made the pick. I believe him. But I also believe that Maybin was still rated fairly high on Modrak's board. Tom Modrak has been at the top of the scouting department for a decade. During that decade the Bills have not made the playoffs. During that same period the Bills have had only one winning season. There is probably not one top 100 ranked player on our roster. Because of the Bills drafting record for the past decade the organization has dug itself into a hole which is going to take years to get out of. Where is the accountability?
KD in CA Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Maybin has mad physical skills. I always read this but have no idea what it means. What 'mad skills' does he have that are supposed to make him a superior NFL player? He's supposedly a little faster than most defenders, but isn't that fairly useless when he's so small and weak that any contact with an opposing player brings his forward momentum to an immediate halt?
apuszczalowski Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Your view on Moulds is skewed by hindsight. If this board existed in 2007, Moulds would have been subject to the same treatment as Maybin. How did I sign up here in 2005 then??????? I could see them letting him go, Didn't Nix or Gailey make a comment about how they have nobody that is able to get to the QB, something that he is supposed to specialise in?
Rico Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Name one Buffalo Bill drafted in the first round that showed so little in the first 2 years that eventually became a productive player worthy of a number 1 selection? Excluding a season long injury. Example: Willis McGahee Some played okay but made slow progress. Maybin has shown absolutely nothing. Keep in mind the guy has a huge contract as well. NO PROGRESS, BIG PAYCHECK= BYE BYE I don't remember Jim Ritcher doing too much his first few years.
