C.Biscuit97 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Remember when we announced we were running the no huddle before training camp? That worked out well. So we probably should just come out and tell NE that Spiller will get 15 touches. That makes sense.
Armchair GM Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Theory: Since Buddy and Chan know their team stinks, they are in a sense "red shirting" Spiller this year. They'll use Freddie and Lynch and save Spiller's legs for future years. That's a good bingo!! My thoughts exactly...however, if you look at his play i the preseason, he's the type of back that needs a number of touches to do his thing...1st carry, -1 yrd: 2nd carry, -3 yrds: 3rd carry, -7 yrds: 4th carry...20 some odd yrd TD run, while smoking 1, 2 even 3 dudes in the process...Yeah, he set a NCAA record for kick & punt returns for TD's...guess what, it took a WHOLE LOT of attempts to do so. Bottom line, the kid needs carries to "get going" as Chan so eloquently put it. So, Jahvid Best is ok to start, but Spiller isn't? Color me confusified. Cuz Detroit is in the 3rd year of their process of rebuilding and they believe they should be winning NOW. And, hate to say, they're a better team than the BILLS.
BuffaloBillsMagic1 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 This is the stupidest organizatiuon in all of sports. Any 1st or second rounder on the worst team in football should start and play immediately. Oce again we are clueless. SOS! Since we are going nowhere this season or anytime soon we should play Maybin, Stiller, troup, carringotn every down unless they are injured. Speed up their development, not slow it down. Acknowledge we are rebuiling and try to do so with young guys!!!!!

Alaska Darin Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Then again, maybe C.J., being a rookie, is having problems picking up a blitzing player ..... and God knows, we need all of the help available to protect the QB. Bingo. Belichick would make Spiller look like a !@#$ing turnstyle. Learn to get your hat in a blitzer's chest and you'll see the field, rook. Cuz Detroit is in the 3rd year of their process of rebuilding and they believe they should be winning NOW. And, hate to say, they're a better team than the BILLS. Detroit has had the luxury of hitting rock bottom. The BILLS, unfortunately, have been able to squeeze out 6 or more wins every season. That, coupled with some ridiculously stupid drafting (Maybin over about 10 other possibilities being the most glaring example) has really hindered this team turning it around. I think the most annoying thing is Kelsay being on the roster. No one can explain to me the value of that over just about any available rookie - especially if the rookie has actually PLAYED linebacker in their career. I don't care if the guy is good in the room, he's not the future. He's simply taking snaps from someone who might turn into a good player. I'd have been happier if they'd kept Joique Bell and sent him out there at LBer.
Sisyphean Bills Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Or let Kelsay cover Finley...LOL It's absolutely brilliant stuff.
BillsVet Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Cuz Detroit is in the 3rd year of their process of rebuilding and they believe they should be winning NOW. And, hate to say, they're a better team than the BILLS. Detroit has bottomed out for years, and as a result received numerous high picks. But, they're most recent rebuild (after a number that didn't work) began in 2009 after they jettisoned Millen, fired Rod Marinelli, and hired new people to man those roles. The new GM was around when Millen was, but they hired a new HC, Schwartz, drafted their QB, switched defensive schemes. They're in year 2 not 3 of a rebuild. Buffalo is in year 0.
Mopreme Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 I said it when we drafted him and I will say it again. This was a terrible pick for the Buffalo Bills. Even if he was playing great right now, it was still a back pick. We desperately needed OL help and one of the best OL in the draft was sitting there for us (Bulaga), but we decided to draft a scat back. We could have taken McCluster in Rd3 and been better off at the position. Bulaga; Clausen; McCluster - This would have been a much better and smarter draft than Spiller, Troupe, Carrington, none of which are contributing. I couldn't agree more. Buddy and Chan need to join the 9.6 percent without jobs Ditto.
Thoner7 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 You mean he is just going to be a situational gimmick player? Who could of possibly seen that coming!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! (detect maximum possible sarcasm here)

Acknowledge we are rebuiling and try to do so with young guys!!!!! Not for nothing, but Aaron Rodgers was a high 1st round pick (#1 if I remember right) and barely sniffed the field until year 4. Are we Green Bay? No. Is Rodgers a RB? No. Do we suck right now? Yes......but it's not like Gailey said he wasn't going to play at all...olr that we don;t have 2 pretty good other RB's right now....Everyone needs to chill...in a couple of years when we are relevant again you will be all be loving Spiller...
Ozymandius Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Could Gailey also mean that Spiller needs to LITERALLY slow down when he gets out on the field? That he becomes too excited, is rushing things and isn't yet using his brain to read the defense and make the right play? I would think that problem is somewhat typical for a rookie. Whatever the case may be, it is clear that Spiller has to improve something to get playing time. Which is fine. Arian Foster was on the practice squad until late in the season last year and now is playing great. Some rookies are NFL ready; some aren't. People are just frustrated since they expect the #9 pick to be NFL ready and that's understandable.
BADOLBILZ Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 really? he rushes 200 yards vs miami. allows trent to make some passes. we blow out miami 35-6 really? he rushes for another 200 yards. allows our d to stay fresh and we win a close one in green bay 28-21 it would still be a bad pick??? hell no! its not his fault he is not being utilized correctly. Best two RB's in the league, arguably, Chris Johnson and Steven Jackson. Neither of their teams made the playoffs last year. The Rams ended up with the worst record in the league despite Jacksons' outstanding season. So, no, Spiller won't make that big of a difference. He just won't. Drafting RB's in round 1 is for teams that don't need a lot of help, not rebuilding teams. You need a good OL and at least a good QB to be a consistently successful organization in the NFL. Yet, the Bills have drafted 4 in round 1 in the last 8 years. Each draft overseen by Tom Modrak. Running backs aren't even the frosting on the cake. They are like the sprinkles, if everything else is good they are interchangeable.

As much as it sucks, and as much as the Bills have sucked this year, it is a fact. Year 0 or rebuilding sucks, especially when you start with a team that has zero stars. Zero. The Bills have a bunch of OK players, but there's nobody on either side of the ball that an opposing team needs to gameplan around. Maybe spiller will turn out to be that guy on O. Maybe Byrd will be that guy on D. Maybe McKelvin will continue to grow into a shutdown corner nobody throws at. Maybe. But they aren't there yet. So there won't be much to enjoy this year except the progress we see out of a few players. If people can't hack that (and there are plenty of whiners here that can't), I suggest they sign off now and come back about the 8th game next year, when we start to see a glimmer of hope.

Year zero is right. This should be year one, but they did not even address OL or QB and without those you are not moving forward as an organization. They actually got worse this season and that is saying something because despite their success in eeking out a few extra wins by playing not to lose, the product on the field has been 2-14 quality offense/defense for almost all of the previous 3 seasons. The last halfway decent team they fielded was Jauron's first season when Donahoe holdovers were the durable players on the team and the playmakers on the field.
TheChimp Posted September 24, 2010 Posted September 24, 2010 It takes more than one draft to fill all the holes the Bills have. I'm personally happy we have a differencemaker in the backfield while we wait for this new coach to hopefully figure out which O-Linemen we need to help get him through to the secondary.

You are indeed comparing the RB position to QB. GB's situation was unique in the annals of NFL football and absolutely nothing like this thing with Spiller. The comparison is completely unreal. You do not take RB's in the top 10 and not start them. They said they needed a difference maker, and now are giving him a few touches and having the guy as a KR. The single most wrong thing with this franchise is their absolute refusal to invest high draft picks in DL and OL. It's the same from TD to Levy to Brandon to Nix (so far): they use lots of resources on positions that rely on those lineman they never draft. People on this very board in 2007 said the same darn thing you're saying now: That this team will be better in a few years. We'll, we're waiting (in Judge Smails voice).

Actually, that was the year where the hot debate was Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers. The 49ers decided to choose Smith and Rodgers proceeded to fall and fall and fall in the draft; all the way to pick #22. Now this is what makes his fall disappointing to the Bills: That year, we would've been in position to draft Aaron Rodgers around pick #13 (DAL - Demarcus Ware), but traded that first round pick the previous year (along with a 2nd that year and a 3rd the next) to move back into the first round for JP Losman. At draft time, this organization shoots itself in the foot, more times than one can count. Here are a few other reminders - Whitner over Ngata at #8, sacrificing a 2nd round pick to move back into the first round to select John McCargo, sacrificing a high 3rd rounder to move up about 8 slots in the 2nd round to select Poz, selecting McKelvin, instead of re-signing Jabari Greer and drafting all pro LT Ryan Clady, selecting Maybin over Orakpo/Cushing/Matthews/Oher, selecting Trent Edwards in the 3rd and James Hardy in the 2nd. Scary when one considers that this ineptitude comprises JUST the last few years! Edited September 24, 2010 by JayBaller10

Not only that, but we sent 2nd and 5th round picks in the Losman trade up. There was no 3rd rounder involved. Facts suck.

The saddest thing is that they seem to have recently come to the conclusion that Lynch is actually a starting-caliber, quality back (which he is). Ugh.
