Feeley can't avoid wrong end zone

DAN LE BATARD

dlebatard@herald.com

Buffalo defensive tackle Pat Williams is an enormous man by any measurement. He is listed at 310 pounds, which is a lie unless things capable of producing eclipses are 310 pounds.

A great many of those pounds, too many, are in the area of a jiggling belly substantive enough to come with its own area code and government. Williams has a lot of body art for a lot of body -- suns (plural) and scorpions (plural) and Chinese symbols (plural). ''About 30,'' he says when asked how many tattoos/murals he has from the side of his neck down.

Point is, it is virtually impossible not to notice this man.

But Dolphins quarterback A.J. Feeley somehow didn't.

And that's one of the many reasons the Dolphins now are a godforsaken 2-10 in this season of calamity.

Feeley threw the football right at Williams' chest very hard during this 42-32 loss. It stuck there, somewhere amid the rolls of fat, and Williams took that ball, the game and the air in this stadium with him in the other direction. As he rumbled toward that end zone, he was like an ocean liner (no brakes) while the Dolphins continued to resemble a sinking one (no breaks).

What was Williams doing as he headed to the end zone?

''I was laughing,'' he said.

And what did he do upon arrival?

''I was tired,'' he said.

ENTERTAINING LOSS

And isn't that where fans of this Dolphins team are today? Somewhere between tired and laughing? Miami is playing for a draft pick now, so we would do well if all the remaining games were like Sunday's -- losing but entertaining. This game had a bit of everything, except stakes.

Williams was too winded and surprised to do much of a celebration, although he did manage to tell the crowd to hush, which was redundant at that point. It is the funniest play in football -- the surprised, panicked fat guy running with the ball -- and several laughing Bills teammates came over to congratulate him. But he kept shooing them away and trying to catch his breath.

''Get out of my way,'' he said. ``I have to go sit down.''

Feeley had a chance to tackle Williams before he got to the end zone. But -- and here's a surprise -- he made a good decision. By getting the hell out of the way.

''He just gave up,'' Williams said. ``He didn't want to hit me. He didn't want none of that.''

Can you blame him?

No, Feeley had had enough.

CAN'T BLAME LINE

He had just wasted the best performance by his offensive line all season. He can't blame a lack of time for these five interceptions, just a lot of awful judgment. He could have had as many as eight interceptions if not for a replay review, a drop and a falling defender.

Feeley has a legitimate NFL arm. And he has shown legitimate NFL toughness in his past three starts. The only reason to watch the last four games of this lost Miami season is to see if he can reveal an NFL head. He hasn't shown that yet. What he has shown is a remarkable, uncanny ability to throw passes that end up in the wrong end zone.

Sunday, hope -- like a lot of animals -- went to die in Williams' belly. Oddly, Williams used only his left arm on his interception -- he's right-handed -- although he didn't catch the ball as much as it caught him.

''That finished the game,'' Williams said. 'I kept telling everyone, `Now we can breathe. It's over.' ''

He smiled.

''I'm all skills,'' he said. ``All hands. I'm fast.''

This last comment actually made him laugh out loud.

Which is pretty much what the Dolphins make the guys on the other sideline do.

i forgot about fletcher falling down on that TD pass. that guy has NO coverage skills.

thats a game you can watch over and over again.:D:lol:

so 1 reviewed INT, 1 droped INT, 1 missed INT due to fletcher falling down, 1 fumble pushed out of bounds by clements.

LOL would that make 11 turn overs.. that would have to be a record.

and a kick return for a TD. LOL :w00t::w00t::lol:

You can just feel Dan LeBastard's pain - bwahahahaha! Suffer you fin-loving fool!

Its sobering to think how close this game was despite all the turnovers. And while Miami is NOT very good, there's always solace to be found in sweeping the hated fish and stomping on them when they're down.

Pat Williams reached the end zone already?  I thought he was still running...

People were complaining about Prime Time not spending enough time on the Bills game but then I hear they showed the Williams TD....that's good for 45 seconds, isn't it? :D

But you know...as entertaining as the Bills game was, look at some of the other ones. McNabb threw for a quarter-mile, Manning nearly did, Baltimore and Cinci was a real nail-biter...there was lots of good football yesterday. Somebody was bound to be short-changed in the highlights.

And then tonight...Dallas and Seattle. Yeech. Think I'll just read a book...

The funniest thing about watching Pat rumbling toward the end zone was all the jiggling/wiggling going on....that mid-section was going about four different directions!

Also, I don't seem to recall Sam Adams vibrating so much on his interception against the Pats a few years ago. Is it me or does Pat look heavier than when he played next to Big Ted?

actually, id have to say Dan Le Batard hates the dolphins as much as we do. he MAY have liked them a long time ago, but i havent seen him write anything positive about them in years(its not like they give him a chance though), which is why im a faithful reader.

years ago(like Kelly-era years ago), my father got me into buying the miami herald after a Bills win cause the writers would rip the dolphins worse than anyone up here. now i just go to miami.com after the games. its always entertaining.
