Simon Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 I am so fu(king sick of seeing teams "convert" 3rd/15or20 because some (*^*&%^$^#company man has to throw a flag at a DB for playing football. If they are going to keep sticking hteir noses into key points in ballgames, the league should remove the automatic 1stdown that accompanies the illegal contact call. These officials have become gutless weaklings, conferencing after every gawdamned call, helping sputtering offenses downfield, flagging guys for the most minor of postplay nudges. Combined with this idiotic, mind-numbing replay system, NFL officials have become the biggest joke of the 4 major US sports. If anybody has the time and/or resources, I'd be reallllly interested to see how the numbers for 3rddown conversion by penalty look this year as compared to year's past. While the crackdown on physical DB's might not manifest itself in a huge way in the total number of interference calls (perhaps maybe on the illegal contact calls) I'd be willing to bet that there has been an enormous upswing in the number of 3rd downs being converted by officials as opposed to offenses. I swear every team in the league has 4 different 3rddown plays where you just run a receiver straight at a DB and bash into him to draw a free first down. Don't teams ever earn their own conversions anymore? Hey stripes..... :I starred in Brokeback Mountain:
ch19079 Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 i remember that play. and on the replay, the WR is bumped at the line. then runs 10 yards dwon field where the safety just runs up and pushes him. i think it was baker (im not sure, but it was one of the younger DBs). how can they be in the NFL and play football if they just ignore the rules. it was a good call and a stupid play by our guy. the "holding" call on McGahee's 60 yard screen pass was a joke. but i saw a block in the back on the opening kick return.

The Bills got screwed by the refs yesterday, plain and simple, and it is always so. The call on Teague was pathetic (said in my best Steven A voice). I think Simon is correct, if they are going to call illegal contact that closely they should revisit it being an automatic 1st down. They have distinctions for running into a kicker/roughing and facemask penalties. Why not the same for contact?
Simon Posted December 6, 2004 Author Posted December 6, 2004 i remember that play What play did I mention? I wasn't talking about any play in the Bills game in particular, and I agree that Baker's downfield bump deserved a flag. I was talking about the other dozen ridiculous flags on 3rddown I seem to see every weekend for the last 3 months. And the reason they didn't call the blockintheback on the opening kickoff is that I think the guy ran himself out of the play mroe than he was forced past McGee.

They have distinctions for running into a kicker/roughing and facemask penalties. Why not the same for contact? Exactly. Just make it a spot foul and give the offense an extra 5 yrds from the spot of the contact. If the yardage results in a 1stdown, so be it. But if it's an 11yrd penalty on 3rd and 19, then make the offense convert its own damned 3rddown!-) Cya

Perhaps a xmas gift of a Thesarus would improve the barbarians language. Apologies for my opening sentence, but thats why I called it a rant. It's not something I do very often but I do reserve its use for the occasional issues which inflame the emotions. That being said, if I had a thesauras I'd probably accuse you of sophistry. Instead I'll just say that you're a teepee and a wigwam; two tents. Cya
Thailog80 Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 The phantom illegal contact on third and twelve in the Jax/Pitt game last night was the worst. The DB never even touched him at all..........even the commentators were baffled over that one.

The DB never even touched him at all..........even the commentators were baffled over that one. 148184 I was just going to bring that up. That was horrible and if Pittsburgh hadn't come back, we could very possibly have been looking at that play as one that ultimately kept us out of the playoffs. All I could think of was "they just gave it to 'em."
Simon Posted December 6, 2004 Author Posted December 6, 2004 The phantom illegal contact on third and twelve in the Jax/Pitt game last night was the worst. That's a good example. And it's happening all over the league, week after week. That one could have even had a direct impact on the result of the game. Without that stupid flag, Jax is 4th/long in their own end with 3:00 left. Instead they end up with a free 1stdown near P'burgh territory late in a 1point game. Imagine the Bills missing out on the playoffs cuz the Jags took the last wildcard spot with a win like that......

The officiating in this league is a complete joke. I saw no indication that the Steelers were playing such an undisciplined game to warrant 11 penalties to Jacksonville's three.
GG Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 (edited) What play did I mention? I was talking about the other dozen ridiculous flags on 3rddown I seem to see every weekend for the last 3 months. 148157 Well, there was the humorous one in the Pitt/Jags game, where they flagged the guy on 3rd down for illegal contact when he didn't make any contact. (oops, I guess it helps to read all responses) Edited December 6, 2004 by GG
GG Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Without that stupid flag, Jax is 4th/long in their own end with 3:00 left. 148190 You're right, there's no way Jaguars convert that one.....

You know the ones with their own Visa commercial.....

You know the ones with their own Visa commercial..... 148205 Well, they do have that gorgeous young quarterback who is Joe Montana and a young Cary Grant all rolled up in one. I'd like to have his babies [/ESPN off]
BillnutinHouston Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 How about the no-call facemask on the Dolphins when DB was sacked?
Thailog80 Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 How about the no-call facemask on the Dolphins when DB was sacked? 148221 Yeah I forgot about that one. But Drew didnt seem to protest it either?
ch19079 Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Quit trying to be objective, I hate that! 148150 whos trying to be objective?? all im saying is the refs sucked all around yesterday. and they have been sucking all year. i dont even want to think back to the first few games. there were several times sunday i said to my self: "on tuesday the refs will issue a statement that they blew several key plays in this game". just once, if a ref throws a flag, then realizes it was the wrong call, they would PICK UP THE FLAG. insted of calling it anyways.... :I starred in Brokeback Mountain:
stuckincincy Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Cincy lost a fumble recovery on one of those "You breathed on a WR" calls. Someone yesterday who was watching NYJ vs HOU mentioned the cheap calls against the Texans.
Kelly the Dog Posted December 6, 2004 Posted December 6, 2004 Exactly.Just make it a spot foul and give the offense an extra 5 yrds from the spot of the contact. I yell about that penalty almost every game. It shouldn't even be a spot foul. If it occurs during a pass play while the ball is in the air, it is interference anyway, and they get the distance and first down. If it just occurs during the play, it should be like an offsides call, 5 yards from LOS. That penalty is totally out of whack.
