September Movies: Wall Street 2, The Town, Devil, and Machete....

With another Summer Season in the books it's time to get serious, for the most part. With the remaining tentpole films waiting for relase in the months of November & December, movie studios bring out more serious fare as September moves in, bringing on the so-called "Adult Season" of movies. Usually this a time when Oscar races begin, but there is still going to be some mindless fun for movie patrons.

Michael Douglas returns to the role that not only won him an Oscar, but arguably his most famous part he has ever played. Just how often do we get to see a sequel to a movie that came out 23 years ago? "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps", follows fallen stockbroker Gordon Gekko as he teams up with a young Wall Street trader, who's mentor was recently murdered, to track down the killer and warn others about an impending massive financial meltdown. Just how excited will people be to revisit the world this charcter lives in? Then again, with the times we live in this movie may be timing it just right, not to mention that it has been quite some time since we've seen Douglas in a major motion picture like this. Shia LaBeouf & Carey Mulligan co-star, and Oliver Stone directs.

Back in 2007, Ben Affleck went behind the camera and gave us "Gone Baby, Gone". The movie brought critical praise and Oscar nominations. Now Affleck directs & stars in, "The Town". As he plans his next job, a longtime thief tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the FBI agent looking to bring him and his crew down. Also starring, Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, Chris Cooper, jeremy Renner, Blake Lively & Pete Postlethwaite.

M.Night Shyamalan lends his name as writer & producer, but leaves the directing to the Dowdle's("Quarantine"), and bring us "Devil". A group of people trapped in a elevator realize that the devil is among them. Sounds like something coming from Shyamalan's mind. Starring Chris Messina, Caroline Dhavernas & Bokeem Woodbine.

A memorable fake trailer from "Grindhouse" becomes a reality as Danny Trejo stars as "Machete". After being betrayed by the organization who hired him, an ex-Federale launches a brutal rampage of revenge against the people who double-crossed him. Co-director Robert Rodriguez has put together a fun cast which includes, Michelle Rodriguez, Cheech Marin, Jessica Alba, Jeff Fahey, Don Johnson, Lindesy Lohan, Steven Seagal & Robert DeNiro.

Milla Jovovich returns for the 4th time as Alice, in "Resident Evil: Afterlife". As the T-Virus continues to spread, Alice maintains her mission to find survivors and keep them safe from the Undead, and to take down the Umbrella Corporation. Reteaming with Claire, Alice makes a dangerous journey to a new city that is said to be a safe haven: Los Angeles. Also starring Ali Larter & Wentworth Miller.

Director Zack Snyder("300" & "Watchmen") brings an intriguing computer animated tale to the big screen entitled, "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole". Soren is a young Barn Owl who lives in the peaceful forest of Tyto. Kidnapped and brought to the foreboding St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls, Soren must face certain challenges -- including taking his first-ever flight -- on a dangerous adventure that leads to the mythical Great Ga'Hoole Tree, where he and his friends Gylfie, Twilight, and Digge look to fight a great evil in their world. The animation looks breathtaking, the real challenge will be if a mainstream audience is ready for this fantasy/action/adventure and somewhat dark tale about owls. Starring the voices of Hugo Weaving, Geoffrey Rush, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, David Wenham, Abbie Cornish, Jim Sturgess & Ryan Kwanten.

George Clooney is, "The American". An assassin hiding out in an Italian village while he anticipates his last-ever assignment tempts fate by seeking out the friendship of a priest as well as the affection of a local woman. Also starring Paolo Bonacelli & Violante Placido.

Emma Stone stars in "Easy A". As she studies The Scarlet Letter, high schooler Olive Penderghast notices her parallels to the novel and begins to work the school's rumor mill to advance her social and financial standing. Also starring Amanda Bynes & Penn Badgley.

In "You Again", A young woman realizes her brother is about to marry the girl who bullied her in high school, and she sets out to expose the fiancée's true colors. Starring Kristen Bell, Odette Yustman, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kristen Chenoweth, Cloris Leachman & Betty White.

Lionsgate enters the world of computer animation with "Alpha & Omega". After being relocated to Idaho by park rangers, a female and a male wolf face a dangerous trip across unfamiliar territory in their attempt to find their way home to Canada. Starring the voices of Hayden Pannetierre, Justin Long & Christina Ricci.

"Going the Distance" is, a romantic comedy centered on a guy and a gal who try to keep their love alive as they shuttle back and forth between Chicago and Los Angeles to see one another. Starring Drew Barrymore, Justin Long, Ron Livingston & Christina Applegate.

In "The Virginity Hit", Four friends use a video camera and their Internet savvy to chronicle their buddy's attempt to lose his virginity. Starring Matt Bennett, Zack Pearlman & Krysta Rodriguez.

even though it's not officially a Sept. movie, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was not widely shown in the US and thus not widely seen and would likely be "new" to most. even with subtitles and dubbing, it's an excellent movie....quite violent and sometimes disturbing but compelling. it's available on DVD now and well worth a watch.

BUMP

Here are this month's Independent Films, and there are plenty.

Garnering plenty of positive buzz from Sundance, Ryan Reynolds stars in "Buried". Paul is a U.S. contractor working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap. Reynolds is red hot after "The Proposal", and is all set to be "Green Lantern" next summer. This little daring indie film, which is all about a man trapped inside a coffin, could propel Reynolds to bigger heights.

Casey Affleck documents Joaquin Phoenix's transition from acclaimed actor to aspiring rapper, in "I'm Still Here".

Woody Allen brings another tale from Europe with, "You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger". The passions, ambitions, and anxieties of two married couples -- Alfie and Helena, and their daughter Sally and her husband Roy -- lead the lovers into trouble and out of their minds.
