eschej13 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 How does CJ Spiller not enter this season as the starting running back? He was the 9th pick in the draft, he's a match-up nightmare for defenses, he's better than expected between the tackles. He should be starting games and Jackson/Lynch should be coming in later to pound it home. Don't get me wrong, the load should be divided, but don't we want the ball in this guy's hands as much as possible? I'm very interested to see what Gailey does when he has the three back healthy. He's going to have some crazy formations!
truth on hold Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 It doesn't matter what they call him on the depth chart. He'll get plenty of touches.

Um becuz he is 187 pounds man, he will get his touches and he will be very productive but he will not start and he doesnt need anything more then 15 touches a game for now, we want him 4 years to come we dont wanna break the damn thing lol.

truth on hold Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) He's listed 196. Whatever he is, he's not big. The only thing that can stop him is inury and I for one don't want to see him pounding it inside. He seems to protect himself well and I'm hoping that, and wise use of his talent, is enough to keep him healthy. Edited August 29, 2010 by Joe_the_6_pack
Dorkington Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Watching these games, you can see he's getting banged up. I'd prefer they use a balanced attack of Jackson/Lynch between the tackles and Spiller as a change of pace. Best of both worlds, imo.

tennesseeboy Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 There's going ton ne a three man rotation and plenty of times we'll see two or even three backs on the field. One of the oldest rules in the game is that if you can run...run first. I suspect Gailey will buy into that given that he had two good backs and the team used its #9 pick on a third exceptional back. There must be a plan in that kind of thinking...and I suspect it will be LOTS of runs. Who starts is pretty irrelevant, but I wouldn't be surprised if the first sets of downs will be given to the most durable of the three.
PromoTheRobot Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Agreed. They can't shouldn't over use. Jackson and Lynch have their game as well. How soon we forget. PTR
Nanker Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 What a nice 'problem' for an OC and HC to have. By the way, Chris Johnson was 197 lbs as a rookie. How's that working out for him? "Weaknesses: Is undersized and must add more bulk to frame in order to hold up physically at the next level. Has better strength than frame indicates but still not strong enough to break lots of tackles or push the pile as an inside runner. Doesn’t always drive his legs and finish runs strong. Durability was a problem throughout college and most concerning is his history of neck injuries. Lacks ideal running instincts and got away with a lot at the college level because of his speed that he won’t get away with in the NFL. Will get overwhelmed at the point of attack versus bigger linebackers in pass pro. Will struggle to hold up in that facet of the NFL game. Ball security has been a problem at times, as he turned the ball over seven times on fumbles during his first three seasons. He also has small hands (7¼ inches)."
billsfan in n.h Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 the starting line up should be jackson, spiller, bell. because we traded marshawn for logan mankins, mankins at guard wood at center
Bob in STL Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 the starting line up should be jackson, spiller, bell. because we traded marshawn for logan mankins, mankins at guard wood at center I like Mankins and I like Wood. BUT. What has Wood done to be annointed the next center? Hangartner is playing fine. Wood has to get his game back. Why change two starting positions at this time. What inside info do you have that says Wood would be an improvement at this tme? If we could make such a trade lets shore up the tackle position instead. This just in .... We have very little experience, skill, and depth at OT. Why would be trade a high quality RB to New England anyway?

He's going to have some crazy formations! Spiller is the truth!!! I would give him at least 15-20 touches a game and spell him with Jackson/Lynch. Those guys are good, with Jackson being very good, but Spiller has the chance to be a once in a long time talent....
BillnutinHouston Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 I see Spiller being used a lot like how the Saints use Reggie Bush. And he'll be in some Wildcat formations I suspect.
Lurker Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) Emmitt smith was small too. Smith weighed 216, which is not small on a 5'9" frame... Edited August 29, 2010 by Lurker
macaroni Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Listening to the game last night I was discussing this with my son who is a gigantic Spiller fan, and vehimently disagreed with me when I said Spiller should be the second or third Bills RB to see the field. He thought (like the OP) that Spiller should be the starting RB. What converted him to my way of thinking was I mentioned if this is what he can do against a defense with "fresh" legs .... imagine what he could do if he was "fresh" and the defense was bashed for a quarter or two by Jackson/Lynch/Bell. I'm not saying Spiller deserves to be second/third string based on ability ... I'm just saying we have four good running backs that are capable of starting, and of the four Spiller has the best chance of being an "electric" game controlling RB running against a defense that has been worn down a half step, but carrying the lions share of the load may be difficult because of his physical build.
Kelly the Dog Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Spiller should not only start but almost always be on the field. And stiill only give him his 15 touches. But Gailey IMO is going to find a way to make this offense something novel in the NFL because Spiller is such a threat. We may see a lot of 3 back and 1 WR sets, with a lot of motion. DCs will have to account for Spiller every play, even when he is a decoy because of his speed and cutback ability. That should allow Jackson and Lynch (and sometimes McIntyre like we saw yesterday) to have some open fields. Just mess with the other teams heads and use Spiller wisely because he's lightning.
