Maybin looked like a little boy playing against men. Sad. Also, looking at Cargo playing with the 3s, Spiller looking very small and mortal and a bunch of 2nd tier castoffs ( torbor, davis, et al) starting on defense, I question this franchise's ability, frankly, to field a competitive NFL team. in my lifetime. It is what it is, fan or no fan, these guys really are quite bad. Even the special teams are now bad. We are looking at one of the worst seasons in the history of the franchise guys. Ive been a fan for 40 years, and this is looking like 1985-6 again. And we played our 1s more than the skins did. Sad. and the skins are in completely new offense and defense as well this year. so forget the "we are learning new stuff" excuse. so were they.

I'm not as heartened that he made a few moves against backups and scrubs in the second half as some.

Maybin is very weak. Williams pushed him to the ground repeatedly and almost effortlessly. Maybin's hand work is atrocious. He has no ability to disengage. As soon as Williams put a mit on him, he was cooked. Maybin looks quick, but he doesn't seem to have the freakish balance of an elite DE to turn the corner running all out. He's runs like a sprinter - in a straight line.

I did like that he kept playing, kept hustling, and tried and had luck with a spin move where he fell into Beck (who had Helen Keller like pocket awareness).

Overall, moving him to OLB hasn't really changed the formula entirely.

And if I might read into what you're saying: if he possesses the technique and the moves to overcome his size, in time he will. In time he will also put on some much needed weight. The problem I saw, and the problem other people in this thread have alluded to is that he doesn't seem to have the size-overcoming technique. I'm not calling in question your technical expertise because frankly I have none of my own, so I'd like to hear your take on where his potential stands based on his (at present) limited physical tools and what we can expect based on the skills he showcased last night.

Yes, thats what im saying. I havent focused on watching him, but from what i see he tends to be a speed rusher a al Freeney but without the ability to use brute force.

My take is the Maybin will stay on this team, be used in passing situations until he shows otherwise. He will continue to frustrate many of the former NFL GMs on this baord and fans alike (like me) as he grows. He may not grow that much hard to say.

He's a unique player, doesnt have a long resume, but def has some talent.

And that is another good point: coming out of Penn State it was widely known that Maybin was somewhat of a raw prospect.

I know he's young. And as already mentioned, the rest of his draft class is mostly taking time to develop as well.

But somebody on here called his play spastic, and I would have to agree. He puts himself out of position. If he's busting his butt to put himself out of position, what good is that effort?

My gripe is that at this stage of the game, he should have learned SOMEthing. He looks worse than a rookie. He looks every bit as raw and undeveloped as one would when they step on a college football field for the first time. The only issue is, he was drafted #1, held out and was awarded big bucks for it. To date, we have seen nothing other than a quick initial burst.

For the money he is being paid- at this point- IMO he is a bust. Does that mean he can't improve? No. Does that mean that one day, he may become a Pro Bowl talent? No. But for all of the money he is making, for his idiotic website, haircut, and attitude, the Bills certainly deserve more than they are getting.

And I agree that not only Jauron (who was rumored as having pushed this pick) is responsible, but Modrak should have been able to talk some sense into us taking a player like Orakpo or Oher over such an unproven, raw prospect such as Maybin.

I agree. My only point is that the odds are stacked against him due to his size. He cant afford to make mistakes bc he will get pancaked.

a quick look at the 2009 sack leaders tends to back up my point. http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tab...;seasonType=REG

most OLBs are playing (listed) at or around 260lbs. Granted some play lighter.

I think what we are seeing is fans' overfrustration with a #11 pick who gets thrown around while hes learning. He may never "get it" and become and decent player. Well see.

My take on him last night ---- and yes ive watched more film in my day than most, as well as having played for over 10 years----- is that we see a guy playing between 230-250 lbs who is hustling his keester off but making mistakes.

Hes raw, hes fast, but hes trying. The real test is the film breakdown, if you continue to see him play then the coaches see something on film they like, if his snaps change to only against 2s and 3s then he is not showing something.

The problem with making assessments from watching the game on TV is 1) most dont know jack about football schemes, 2) you dont know the particlar play / coverage called, 3) even if you did or could guess, the sideline view sucks.

even the Lee evans thread discussion.... you dont know at what point EVans was suppsoed to break or when the ball was supposed to be thrown so discussion is only an exercise in futility, something of a pleasure on this board.

Excellent take on Maybin. One of the most astute observations out there.

Seeing as though he got a huge amount of snaps yesterday, I imagine that Gailey said...welp....the only way he is going to learn is to put him out there. The guy is young and hungry, let him take his licks and hopefully he'll hand some out in the process. Not an entirely positive sign (if the coaching staff saw him as a huge contributor there would be a concern for injury), but the kid works hard and has talent....you have to imagine he'll put it together at some point, regardless of his weight.

Maybin played the entire game tonight.

And I'm really glad.

He got tossed around out there. And I'm glad.

A year after being taken in the first round, he's on our roster at least until the end of this year. So if he gets tossed around for four entire preseason games, great. Let him take his licks. Based on how badly he was manhandled by the Washington first and second stringers, I'm guessing he doesn't even sniff the field during the regular season.

The dude is small. Not even for a professional football player, but for a grown athletic male, he's small.

If he gets nicked during the preseason gauntlet that I hope Chan continues to put him through, it will be the best thing for his career. He needs to take 11 months, and gain 40 pounds. Or else he's out.

He's big enough. He's just not a tough, physical football player.

He absorbs punishment and it's embarrassing to watch. Watching him get repeatedly staggered by lumbering offensive lineman is a lot like watching Rob Johnson contort into various painful shapes upon contact by opposing pass rushers.

8. Eugene Monroe (T)

9. BJ Raji (DT)

10. Michael Crabtree (WR)

11. Aaron Maybin (DE/LB)

12. Knowshon Moreno (HB)

There are more than a fair share of projects on this list IMO.

Boston's Big Dig was a smaller project than Aaron Maybin.

That's because Washington's 3rd and 4th line players came in....

He is "raw." He is clearly a boy playing against men...

Reminds me of my high school days. He looks like a freshman with talent playing on the JV team. Move the freshman to the varsity squad and he isn't shi*. Maybe he can progress but he looks to be of little value this year. We really needed him to step up. What a waste of a first round pick. I got mad every time I saw Orakpo's face thinking he should be on our team.

The thing about Maybin is that he's not a football player, he's an athlete. He has no technique, he doesn't use his hands well at all, he offers no counter moves, he's soft at the point of attack, he plays out of control and shows no instincts for the game.

I've played with a bunch of guys like him. Shirts off, on the bench and running gassers they look great. Engaged with a lineman, they are flat-footed and clueless.

I just don't see anything out of him that flashes instinct or true football ability.

Very good insight and I happen to agree.

I did see Trent Williams toss Maybin around like a rag doll early in the game. But I am not a Maybin hater, so I wasn't focused on him as much as the haters are.

I also saw Trent Williams grab a handful of Maybin's facemask and toss him around, while the referee is afraid to throw a flag for illegal use of hands.

So what? One of the biggest thing between a successful and unsuccessful player is confidence. Making players, no matter who they are against, is always a good thing. People falling all over themselves about Jimmy Clausen and his 41 QB rating playing against the Ravens scrubs.

Well expect or the little fact Maybin played at a major college power and was a first round draft. Other that, your high school buddies are teh exact same as Maybin.

Me too. Orakpo vs Maybin is equivilent to man vs. boy.

I really think it will take Maybin two more years to fill out and develop, if he ever does. He should have stayed in school. Yet he is cashing in huge paychecks.

Could have been a call.

Looked like he got under the mask and had his throat. He just rode him off of the play and tossed him. Trent Williams will find out that not every DE is going to be like that.

I like the way Williams played for a rookie.

Well, then Maybin made the right choice. It just can't believe people are on the kid so much, especially after he made a few nice plays (I don't care who they were against).

And say he does just develop into a pass rush specialist that gets 7+ sacks a year. Is that such a bad thing?

I'll tell you what, we'll get together and compare college careers...I bet I win. I'm serious about this too...PM me and I'll even buy ya a drink while we're out :wallbash:

Put 'em on the table boys. We'll let Cablebabe judge!

Yup. He didn't have a great game, but he showed flashes of why he was drafted. He is VERY quick. Give the guy more PT in the preseason and see if he starts to figure it out. I was a bit encouraged by his performance tonight.

Yeah, give the kid a chance to play and develop some moves from his new position that utilize his strengths. Derrick Thomas wasn't mauling people either and used his speed and finesse to get to the QB...and our fan base would trade their right arm for a Derrick Thomas right now...

Ultimately he may be a bust, average player, or great player...too early to tell when he has had very little playing time on the field and is being moved to a position better suited for his skill set.
