_BiB_ Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 Have Sci Fi channel on as background noise today. Sure are some crappy movies floating around. What are the best Sci Fi movies? I go with "Forbidden Planet" and "The Day the Earth Stood Still."
daquixers Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 The Chronicles of Riddick - all other Sci-FI i just dont like.
Fezmid Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 Firefly the series. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...&s=dvd&n=507846 The idiots at Fox cancelled it, but there's a reason it was the #1 best selling DVD at Amazon for months (before and after its release), and there's a reason that Universal picked it up and made a movie (with all of the same cast members - http://www.serenitymovie.com - comes out September 30th). If you like sci-fi, westerns, or excellent character development and dialog, you'll love the series (keep in mind that it's not Star Trek type sci-fi. There's no super-scanners, transporters, phase cannons, etc. You gotta watch it, but I don't know ANYONE who's seen it and not liked it; 1,164 Amazon reviews and it has a 5-star rating). CW

CW 145791 Not a movie.Best sci-fi TV series is Lost in Space. Jonathan Harris as Dr. Smith is one of the top 10 most entertaining characters in TV history.

Matt in KC Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 I'd vote for Blade Runner, the original Alien, and Star Wars. They all did a great job of immersing you in their world.
Rico Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 Except he was nailing Penny. Dirty old man. 145796 Can't blame him, I would've too.

And most of the episodes from the series are better than 99% of the Sci Fi movies out there. I hope you're kidding about Lost in Space... It should've been called "Gilligan's Island in Space" CW

Rico Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 I hope you're kidding about Lost in Space... It should've been called "Gilligan's Island in Space" CW 145800 Oh the pain, the pain of it all.
DC Tom Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 How can you not love a show that uses inflated beach balls for a minefield? 145801 Yeah...great show. Remember that episode when they landed on that planet and ran into that monster...? Best SF movie is...Star Wars, honestly. There's others I like more, but the simple fact is that Star Wars took the classic heroic epic ("young hero on a quest finds spiritual growth, with a father figure, rogue, and princess accompanying him") and told it better in a SF setting than any other movie ever has.
Rico Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 BTW I love The Day The Earth Stood Still, but never really got into Forbidden Planet, though I've tried several times. I prefer the Lost in Space robot to Robby the Robot.
OnTheRocks Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 best sci fi television? Mystery Science Theatre!
Fezmid Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 best sci fi television? Mystery Science Theatre! 145808 I'm starting to realize why there's nothing on TV anymore and why the good shows get cancelled.... CW
Rico Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 best sci fi television? Mystery Science Theatre! 145808 Now you made it tough. Alright, Lost in Space just dropped to #2.

Fezmid Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 V 145811 Excellent choice. And nice use of font size and color! CW
