Guest dog14787 Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 That's a rather persistent legend here. Don't know why, as it's completely false. Walsh was asked by the 49ers to evaluate the QB class that year. He recommended that the 49ers pick Jake Plummer. The 49ers ignored him and picked Druckenmiller instead. http://sportsthenandnow.com/2010/03/07/san...st-round-picks/ http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writ...05/strong.arms/ So we take Druchenmiller off the list of Walsh recommendations and add Jake Plummer and what do you know, another playoff caliber QB who's last real stint took his team to the AFC Championship game. In my opinion its somewhat disrespectful citing one of the best coaches ever as making a mistake about a QB he thought very highly of, when the coaching/ management side of the equation especially on the offensive side of the ball for the QB has been absolutely pathetic, PATHETIC!!!, so to all of you couch potato football scouts who think you know what your talking about when it comes to TE, lets just wait and see how right you are now that Trent Edwards actually plays under a system that works and a HC that knows what the hell he's doing!!!
bbillyfootballcoach Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 gee really Bill walsh said thaaaat?? really oh my god, no one ever knew that. So where did u find that news? do u have a secret inside source? I hadnt heard that since...um everyday. Um news flash, we have argued this out a hundred times. Bill walshes thoughts dont erase the proven disaster that is trent edwards. Um do you watch football at all????

Cynical Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 http://www.usatoday.com/sports/nfl/2002dra...2-04-18-qbs.htm Huh! Thank you! And bedsides the part you highlighted, the other passage that sticks out is: "Even Walsh, who acquired Joe Montana and Steve Young for the 49ers, needed to be pushed into selecting Montana in the third round in 1979. Walsh nearly chose Steve Dils." So for all the blabbering about how great Walsh was selecting QB talent, the guy needed to be pushed into selecting Montana. As somebody else pointed out, Walsh was very high on Fuller. The only reason Marv was able to select Fuller before Walsh was due to the fact the 49ers had no first round pick that year.

So your taking a writers words/speculation as Bill Walsh's thought process, OK Its what the man did that counts, and you nor I or anyone else was in Walsh's head at the time to really know how he was thinking so going with the man's actions only seems logical to me, anything else is pure speculation.

There's quotes there for a reason.
Cynical Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 So we take Druchenmiller off the list of Walsh recommendations and add Jake Plummer and what do you know, another playoff caliber QB who's last real stint took his team to the AFC Championship game. And was promptly benched the following year for a rookie, never to play football again. He was 32. Why was he benched? For the same reason that plagued Plummer his entire career: He was inconsistent. He never became the next Joe Montana, "including Super Bowls" as Walsh predicted. PATHETIC!!!, so to all of you couch potato football scouts who think you know what your talking about when it comes to TE, lets just wait and see how right you are now that Trent Edwards actually plays under a system that works and a HC that knows what the hell he's doing!!! Can we include you in that description? Or are you, or have been, a professional scout? I hope Trent pans out, so we can move on from this silly discussion. But I have seen this musical before. 1) Trent looks good in TC, says all the right things, Trent fans go nuts. 2) Trent plays questionable during preseason, Trent fans down play his performance citing vanilla offense, it's only preseason", and such. 3) Trent plays horrible during regular season, Trent fans blame Bills management, HC, OC, OL, defense, special teams, other players, concussions, phantom concussions, play calling, offensive schemes, my dead grandmother, his uncle, her twice removed niece, Chucky the Killer doll, Satan, etc ..... We are seeing #1 all over again. How about we wait until we see 2 and 3 before we start circle jerking to his poster?

IDBillzFan Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 There is plenty of Edwards bashing that goes on daily on this board. However, I go back to Bill Walsh. Walsh drafted some of the greatest players this league has ever known and he endorsed our very own Trent Edwards. In the end, I feel Bill Walsh will be right once again. Go Edwards and Go BILLS! If Bill Walsh were alive, no one would give a rat's asshair what he thought of Trent Edwards.
dave mcbride Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 In his announcer phase, Bill Walsh also stated during John Walsh's (BYU) senior year that he was the best QB in the country and would be the first QB chosen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Walsh_(American_football)
Guest dog14787 Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Keep reaching. I'm not the one reaching here, you are...
sharper802 Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Bill Walsh also had "chemo brain". It's a real problem. The brain isn't the same after chemo let alone the his age. Maybe he wasn't the same evaluator of talent as he was in the 1980's. Still want Trent to succeed but just because Bill Walsh said he was good aint going to make it so..

So when Trent Edwards proves he's a good starting caliber QB in the NFL we can credit it to all the "chemo brain" talking, (sighs) right...
ieatcrayonz Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 So when Trent Edwards proves he's a good starting caliber QB in the NFL we can credit it to all the "chemo brain" talking, (sighs) right... Yes. And when he proves he can fly he'll get the lead in Mary Poppins.
Guest dog14787 Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Yes. And when he proves he can fly he'll get the lead in Mary Poppins. Glove wearing Mary Poppins, hmmm, I like it
ConradDobler Posted August 8, 2010 Posted August 8, 2010 Glove wearing Mary Poppins, hmmm, I like it Now I have a mental image of Trent carrying an umbrella onto the field. Thanks a lot, Dog.
bbb Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 I think this Bill Walsh connection is way overblown.........Marv didn't call Walsh and ask him if he should draft him.........Marv called Walsh as a friend when Walsh was sick (and eventually dying). They got talking about Trent and Walsh praised him, saying that you're getting a good quarterback.........It was nothing more than that.
reddogblitz Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Do you watch football at all??? Do you realize a QB needs an O-line that can block??? Do you realize a QB needs an offensive system that actually works??? Do you realize Trents coaching sucked??? Do you realize the Bills management sucked??? Ummmm, I'll ask you again, do you watch football at all???????!!!!!!! dog14787 I have heard you say this many times. And no doubt it's true. But didn't Fitz in 2009 have the same O-line, offensive system, coaching that sucked, and the same Bills management? Yet, when he was playing the Bills won 5 out of 9 including 2 division wins. If Trent is so good, why couldn't he do at least this well? This tells me something is missing. Confidence, leadership, the ability to play in bad weather, and being winner is what's missing. These can't be coached. Either you go it or you don't. Sorry, but at least from what I've seen so far, Trent just doesn't have it. No matter what Bill Walsh said.

Ummmm, I'll ask you again, do you watch football at all???????!!!!!!! A team needs an o-line, a system, and good coaching and management. QBs, if they're really good, can do without it. They won't take their team to the Super Bowl if they're the only good thing on the team, but they can still play pretty good QB. Archie Manning, for instance. The guy was sensational and never broke .500 in his career because he was on an awful team. But he still played a hell of a lot better than Trent Edwards.
