boyst
9 year veteran with 78 sacks has been released from the team... I do not know what to this! Schobel Released per ESPN "If he chooses to retire, he will do so as a Buffalo Bill. But this move allows him the opportunity to play somewhere else if so chooses and we felt that was a fair thing to do for a guy who has played hard for us the past nine seasons," Bills general manager Buddy Nix Schobel told The AP on Monday that if he did play this season, it would be his last in the NFL. versus... However, Schobel's agent, Jeff Nalley, told ESPN that Schobel intends to play in 2010.
K-9
Shocking! Seriously, it was the classy thing for the Bills to do. GO BILLS!!!

Rayzer32
The Bills heard NE was interested so they cut him ASAP. Can't wait to watch Schobel be the one to take out our QB. And didn't Nix just tell everyone Schobel wasn't going anywhere? Gotta love our honest GM.
Fan in Chicago
Now that it is official, I would like to say a big thank you to AS for a wonderful and self-less career for the Bills. I wish things had turned out differently in that he would play this year, contribute, help the youngsters and then retire a Bill. But that was not to be and I wish him success in the future within or without the NFL.

How dense can our fans be...do you think it would help his trade value or hurt his trade value if Nix said we are just going to cut him? Seriously... Do you think its possible that he publicly denied being willing to cut him to see if he could find some kind of trading partner before he actually cut him? I'm sure he had the offers flowing in during those 24 hours or so between his comments and the actual time he was released. This is just another example of how dumb this organization can be. Why release him now, why not wait til after the pre-season, or better yet, how about before the draft? AS knew after last year he wasn't playing another game with this team, when he said he was contemplating retirement. Think about it. It's obvious now, but no one was going to trade anything for him. boyst
respect from future free agents. I would have agreed with you if this was a different business, but this is the NFL. Todays players are not players any more, they are businessmen who complete on an athletic field. Few of them care about the "respect" the team gives them; see fatty in DC. Those that care about loyalty are the 2nd tier players.
nero47
What does giving a player what he wants gain you?? Nothing. What does keeping a non-playing player gain you?? Nothing. If you haven't noticed players and agents now run the game. Free Agency years ago insured that. No disrespect for Schobel, but he should have been a man about his true intentions before now. BillsVet
respect from future free agents. This was the same thing said when Buffalo chose to franchise Clements with no intention of re-signing him. It was wrong now and it was wrong then. They just look bad. Money and winning are the only thing free agents look for in a new team.
K-9
What does giving a player what he wants gain you?? Nothing. Yeah, it would have been better to drag it out for as long as possible since that would have had NO adverse effects on the rest of the team at a time when a new coaching staff is trying to implement entirely new schemes and needs to stamp its mark. Better to get jerked around for another couple weeks just to end up in the same place. The Bills did right by themselves, AS, and MOST IMPORTANTLY the young players who are out there busting ass and deserve the opportunity. GO BILLS!!! If you are going to test the trade market (which clearly there wasnt one), you dont publicly say you are about to cut the guy. Clearly there was no market and as a sevice to a player who gave a lot of good years to this team and stayed out of trouble they cut him now. I dont have a problem with that. There was no point to drag it on. Cutting him now sends a clear message to the team...show up and work, no one is above the team. It also shows confidence in our young guys and now they know the work they are putting in is being noticed and they really are playing for a starting spot. Mike in Syracuse
This will also free up some $$$ and a roster spot for Spiller. Let's face it, the guy was a career DE, making the transition to 3-4 LB at his age was iffy at best.

I guess being honest and a nice guy mean more than winning. As Leo Durocher said, "Nice Guys Finish Last" so this organization must be full of nice guys. There is no money being spent on a guy on the failed to report list, or for that matter on a guy traded for a draft pick. Just to let him go to sign with New England, Houston or whatever is plain dumb. New people, same ol same ol dumbness at OBD.

Yeah, because no other team has ever franchised a player and then let him walk. See Samuel, Asante and *'s, N.E.
