Robert Paulson Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 Malbec from Argentina Los Hornitas(the ants) and Alamos are 2 good ones. should be $8-12/bottle or a Rioja from Spain Conde de ValdMar sp? Riserva or Crianza Remilurri is another good Rioja. stay away from California: Zin, Cab, Merlot or Chardonny- overpriced marketed swill until you get over the $100 range a Pinot Noir from Oregon like Adelsheim will set you back about 30 but oh so good. also for ~$30 you can get a Chateue Neuf du Pape (the Pope's new castle) like Vieux Telegraphe that will blow any Shiraz from australia away if your tired of over oaked butter flavoured stevestojan chardonny from California try a Sauvignon blanc from New Zealand. crisp, fruit flavours that stand up well with seafood. a chablis (Chardonny) from France is nice also. you can taste the varietal flavour without the oaky California flavour- how tough is it to make wine when you oak any flavour out of it? A Macon-Village or St Veran will due. no need to spring for Pouilly-Fuise. finally a Pinot Grigio from Italy will be light and crisp- anything in the $8-10 range will work. don't spend $20 for the Santa Margarita (marketed swill) Pinot Gris (same grape) from Oregon will have a little more body and fruit but will be ion the $14-16 range i apologize for the spelling
Matt in KC Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 Well, nobody has a good red wine in the $5 - $10 range because they don't exist. In general, you get what you pay for in wine. $10 - $15 you can find some decent bottles. Try a cab or merlot from here, available in any liquor store: http://www.beaulieuvineyard.com/wines/ 144772 Respectfully, I disagree. Price does make a difference, but there are some very good bargains out there. Just don't confuse an everyday bottle with something special. I've really gotten into wine the last few years and have tried many expensive bottles, and have also gone on a quest to find cheap ones I like. Our "house" wine (we bought a case of each recently) is Stump Jump (about $8-9 at World Market) which is a bit sweet, or Santa Christina - Sangiovese (pronounced san-jo-vay-say) which is much drier and tart. It's about $9 and might be at Harris Teeter. Another good cheap bottle is Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon, which you can usuall find at $8-10. I finst got into wine drinking Luna di Luna Merlot, but I'm not sure if the quality has gone way down, or if it's just that my tastebuds have gotten more discerning....
sfladave Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 Good excuse! "Honey, that's your 8th glass of wine!" "Hey, the Bills need a FG to win! I can't stop now!" 144673 And that is in the 1st quarter!
