Vendor inspection reports

By Paula Lavigne and Lindsay Rovegno

ESPN

The following list is culled from inspection reports for MLB, NBA, NHL and NFL venues in the United States and Canada operating in 2009. Results based on most recent routine inspections or equivalent of a full inspection. The score is based on the percentage of vendors in violation of health requirements.

HSBC Arena

Buffalo Sabres

Vendors with critical violations: 8%

Inspection report excerpt: Two critical violations for having a toxic chemical in an unlabeled spray bottle.

Ralph Wilson Stadium

Buffalo Bills

Vendors with critical violations: 12%

Inspection report excerpt: In one case an inspector ordered workers at one stand to toss all hot dogs and sausages because they were too warm while waiting to be cooked.

Buffalo is actually one of the safest places compared to most of the list.

the best of the worst. i still don't see how 100% of stands could have a violation. Hell, it was easy for me when I managed a place at Darien Lake to keep the inspector happy.

Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium

Denver Broncos

Vendors with critical violations: 61%

Inspection report excerpt: At three bars, inspectors found fruit flies in bottles of whiskey.

Sun Life Stadium

Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins

Vendors with critical violations: 93%

Inspection report excerpt: In June 2009, an employee complained anonymously that small insects and other debris were blended into frozen alcoholic beverages at a stand where equipment wasn't being cleaned. When inspectors checked, they issued a critical violation for a buildup of slime inside the frozen drinks machine.

Tropicana Field

Tampa Bay Rays

Vendors with critical violations: 100%

Inspection report excerpt: Several violations addressed dirty countertops, utensils and equipment. Although every report indicated a critical violation, all vendors met basic inspection standards to keep operating.

Ford Field

Detroit Lions

Vendors with critical violations: 70%

Inspection report excerpt: Inspectors cited one location 11 times in the past six years after seeing employees who didn't wash their hands. At another stand, they found an employee's half-eaten hamburger in a warming unit.

Yankee Stadium

New York Yankees

Vendors with critical violations: 48%

Inspection report excerpt: Five hot dogs registered 91 degrees in a hot-holding unit when they were supposed to be no cooler than 140. Inspectors also had a vendor dump a bottle of Chivas Regal whiskey containing dead fruit flies.

Cowboys Stadium

Dallas Cowboys

Vendors with critical violations: 72%

Inspection report excerpt: In its first season, Cowboys Stadium had a relatively high percentage of critical violations, including several for inadequate hand-washing facilities. At one kiosk, hot dogs were 71 degrees, almost half the required holding temperature of 135 degrees.

Verizon Center

Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals

Vendors with critical violations: 100%

Inspection report excerpt: Mice droppings, a critical violation in Washington, were found at at least 10 vendors.

Perhaps Florida has stricter standards and more inspections than most states. This would lead to more violations. So maybe its the top of this list that you should be worried about.
