Bass pro told to s**t or get off the pot.

Why does government hold the land to start with, and why are the taxpayers on the hook for at least 300 million dollars? This is about lining the pockets of everyone except the taxpayers. That is pretty much what the state does.

Obviously, the only solution to this problem is to do another government study conducted by overpaid government employees with lucrative benefits. That's what's made Buffalo the thriving metropolis that it is today.

That, or give huge kickbacks to the Mayor and Common Council. Buffalo politics is a cesspool. Just read some of the other stories on the Buffalo News front page. FYI: I went to high school with the guy they are trying to jam through as Police Chief.

Are they still something like 99% Democratic Party? I've not been back there in years.

Good article. Having lived between Harrisburg and Baltimore... Bass Pro is kind of "Gander Mountain on Steroids".

You know, for years now now I've seen references on this board to 'Bass Pro Shop' as a planned centerpiece of a redevelopment of Buffalo and it has always puzzled me.

Given that they don't appear to operate in the Northeast, I have never actually set foot in a Bass Pro Shop, but to me, the name sounds like a cross between Sports Authority and Eddie Bauer. So what am I missing? What else does this enterprise offer besides sporting goods and outdoor gear (with presumably a fine selection of fishing poles) that would make it a popular enough tourist destination to lead a redevelopment of a moribund part of the city?

Gotta love the date on this PR. Buffalo at its best...

(map of store locations...they've probably doubled since this project was first conceived)

I don't get it either. I've been to it a bunch of times, but Bass Pro (as someone mentioned) is just Gander Mountain on roids. Its a giant camping/hunting/fishing store. They sell anything and everything relating, including boats and ATVs. Pretty cool place to go to, but not some place you make a special trip for.

File it in the general category of Buffalo's eternal wait for Godot.

Whether it's casinos, Bass Pro, Bashar Issa, Rigases, etc. There's always that knight on the horse waiting to ride in and save the city.

Here's a vid of their

just before it opened.

I've been to their store in eastern PA and it doesn't have the bowling alley or shooting gallery. It does have a massive aquarium room though, and it's very impressive. The stores do have a "WOW factor" but if the planned store for Buffalo isn't large - that would be diminished to "wo".

There's one up the road from me. They are on the end of a failed mall (My wife calls it the Bass end of the mall). They do well. I don't think that folks are flying in just to shop there, but they certainly draw from our tri-state (IN-OH-KY) area.

They managed to whack off most of the competition, especially those that sold to the shooting sports fans. 2 outfits in particular - a local concern named Relo (great selection, but idiots - I was strolling about in the store one day, and a clown behind the counter was trying to sell a vastly inappropriate handgun to a young family. This jerk chambered a .45 ACP into a single-action semi-auto, put it into battery and waved it around while demonstrating how to manipulate the hammer to de-rooster it) and a company called Jumbo sports. Dick's sporting goods still competes, but they are also dumb re firearm safety.

The RULES are:

1. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction.

2. Never hand over, or accept a firearm with a closed action. Both parties are obligated to inspect the chamber and if present, the magazine.

Yep. 100% more likely. Byron Brown would make Rob Blagojevich blush.

I actually overheard him speaking the other day while out eating lunch. The guy is weapons-grade stupid.

Personally, I don't care what retail outlets go into canalside. But if a store needs 35 million of public money to get off the ground, maybe it isn't such a great idea.
