Beerball Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Link The newspaper says Afghanistan's mineral wealth was discovered by a small team of Pentagon officials and American geologists, using charts and data collected by Soviet mining experts during the Soviet Union's occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s.
UConn James Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Gee, I wonder why the Soviets didn't tell anyone about these? Couldn't be that they wanted to become imperialist pigs themselves, could it? No, I don't believe that. Can only hope that this could provide an income and badly needed jobs for the people there, esp. as an alternative to growing/producing opium. A close relative who is serving there currently and will likely be promoted to Master Sergeant after this deployment (as high up as you can get as a non-comm) wrote last week, "It's like Vietnam all over again here." And yet...they'll still hate us. A good majority will. Yep. The duality is that they hate us, but ~70 percent of the citizens say that they still need us right now for security. Lots of tension that rides along with that duality, tho. Literally, 700 years from now, they will still be bemoaning the cats who died in an airstrike that took out the Al Queda #3. These people 'forgive and forget' nothing.
buffaloaggie Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Excellent! We will cut our dependence on the Middle East and its' oil, and focus on the mineral reserves in Afghanistan, where it is much more stable

Hossage Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Do any conspiracy theory flags go up in anyones mind here? The ole war for oil bit?
DrFishfinder Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Link Now it remains to be seen what the outcome of this will be. How the ownership works out, who the companies & workers will be and how the profits are distributed.
JÂy RÛßeÒ Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Actually the US discovered that the Ruskies had discovered them.
Beerball Posted June 14, 2010 Author Posted June 14, 2010 Actually the US discovered that the Ruskies had discovered them. Yeah, I thought of having the thread title read something like that but decided to go with their headline.
buffaloaggie Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Now it remains to be seen what the outcome of this will be. How the ownership works out, who the companies & workers will be and how the profits are distributed. And we have Charlie Wilson to thank for this opportunity
PastaJoe Posted June 14, 2010 Posted June 14, 2010 Well, we were told that the war would pay for itself. Oh wait, wrong war. Nevermind.
ExiledInIllinois Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 Better start strip-mining Yep... Hydraulic strip-mining ala Pale Rider!
Jim in Anchorage Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 Well, we were told that the war would pay for itself. Oh wait, wrong war. Nevermind. Reference? Footnote? Source? Anything?
ExiledInIllinois Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 Reference? Footnote? Source? Anything? But honest! That is what George the used car salesman told me! I swear! Is there a Lemon Law on this kinda ****!
DC Tom Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 So much for that troop withdrawl... Well, not now. We have a responsibility to teach those goat-herders about capitalism. Because it's not like they can learn it, say, opium farming...
ExiledInIllinois Posted June 15, 2010 Posted June 15, 2010 Well, not now. We have a responsibility to teach those goat-herders about capitalism. Because it's not like they can learn it, say, opium farming... Scary... I have to say, that is what sprang into my mind. Hope that notion embarrassed you Tom! That is better than being "Iced!"
