TracyLee Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Okay, I need a little expertise in this area, as it is simply not my forte. My son downloads tons of movies from KaZaa and has a dvd burner/player on his computer (eMachines T3092) But the software (Nero?) that came with it is lousy (or so he says) and he can't figure out how to transfer his downloaded movies to a dvd disc. The movies play fine on his computer but getting them on the dvd disc just isn't happening. It just won't happen for some reason. Is there some kind of software that he can use to decode these movies (some are encrypted, I think? He does have Dvix, whatever that is...) and get them on dvd? I know some movies that are store bought are copyright protected and can't be copied, is there a way around this? He has a small dvd player that he takes on hockey tournaments with him and wants to be able to watch some of these movies on that device. This is for his own personal use and no one elses. Any software recommendations?
Corp000085 Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 i use nero, but i haven't used it to burn movies into dvds. Just mp3s into cds.. The concept is the same though. Nero converts the video file to a raw dvd file and copies it. I've got the nero OEM version that came with my burner. I'll be upgrading to the full suite because i like the program very much. Just make sure he's got the settings for the burning software set just right. If not, it will come out garbled.

They're cracking down on music now but movies aren't far behind.
stevestojan Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Not to sound like big brother, but one summer i was home for college, and my room was no longer my room. I had been bumped from my old bedroom, which was now an office. Anyway, I didnt have a TV and I need TV on to go to sleep (i dont know, weird thing). Anyway, I went on Kazaa and downloaded 10 episodes of Seinfeld. About a week later, my powerlink stopped working. I figured it was just a temporary thing, and I let it go. Still, next day, nothing, so i called, and they said my account was suspended, and it was being reveiwed with the copywrite (or copyright, whatever) infringement department and I should expect a phone call. Two days later, a phone call from a detective with the Buffalo PD. Told me that i was offering copyrighted material from my machine. See, if you dont go in and turn it off, whatever you download is available to everyone else (hence, P2P sharing works). Anyway, he said it was my first and last warning. A week later, I got a huge packet in the mail from either 20h Century Fox or one of those HUGE companies (forget which one at the time - whichever one owns the company that produces seinfeld) explaining that what I was doing was punishable by up to 250,000 dollars and 5 years in prison. Again, obviously just a scare tactic, but it worked. I don't know if the moral here is to not DL or to make sure you aren't sharing, but let me tell you, i was sweating bullets for a couple days. Just my $.02. Oh, and currently I use DVD Shrink, but that's just to back up my DVDs that I own, in case they get scratched

The same goes for WinMX, there are settings for sharing that you can disable. But thanks for the input.

All with the full knowledge of his mother. Even better, she's an avowed union employee screwing over her brethren who work in the industry. Now let's blame the Chinese for stealing American jobs.

Just Jack Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 Now let's blame the Chinese for stealing American jobs. 142041[/snapback] Since the webpage I got this from requires that the Chinese language pack be loaded into IE, here's the entire article: Wal-Mart's China inventory to hit US$18b this year - From ChinaDaily.com.cn By Jiang Jingjing (China Business Weekly) Updated: 2004-11-29 15:21 The world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, says its inventory of stock produced in China is expected to hit US$18 billion this year, keeping the annual growth rate of over 20 per cent consistent over two years. The trend is expected to continue, company officials revealed. "We expect our procurement stock from China to continue to grow at a similar rate in line with Wal-Mart's growth worldwide, if not faster," said Lee Scott, the president and CEO (chief executive officer) of Wal-Mart. An unnamed company official also stated the firm will extend its procurement base from South China's Pearl River Delta to the North and East China in the coming few years. A market rumour says the retailer has its eyes on a 340,000-square metre warehouse at a logistics garden of the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Bonded Area. Scott covertly visited the site earlier this month, and hopes to own the whole warehouse to accommodate the firm's further expansion in China. At present, Wal-Mart has quite limited warehouse resources in East China. Xu Jun, Wal-Mart China's director of external affairs, ruled out the rumour, saying the CEO has never visited that or any other site for a warehouse. Nevertheless, he said China is Wal-Mart's most important supplier in the world. The overseas procurement home office in Shenzhen, a city of South China's Guangdong Province, has played a key role in the firm's global purchasing business. Wal-Mart shifted its overseas procurement centre from Hong Kong to Shenzhen in February 2002 to better serve the purchasing and exporting business. "If Wal-Mart were an individual economy, it would rank as China's eighth-biggest trading partner, ahead of Russia, Australia and Canada," Xu said. By the end of September, 2004, the top seven trading partners to the Chinese mainland are the European Union, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), South Korea and China's Taiwan Province, state statistics from the Ministry of Commerce. Last year, the firm bought US$15 billion products from China, half from direct purchasing, the other from the firm's suppliers in China. More than 5,000 Chinese enterprises have established steady supply alliances with Wal-Mart. Good quality and low price are the major attractions of the retailing giant. Insiders point out Wal-Mart's imports from China have largely influenced the US trade deficit in China, which is expected to reach US$150 billion this year. Xu declined to comment if the anti-dumpling measures of the US Department of Commerce have impacted the firm's procurement of textile commodities and household appliances in China, saying again that China is an important sourcing base for the firm. So far, more than 70 per cent of the commodities sold in Wal-Mart are made in China. Experts say Wal-Mart's plan of increasing its procurement from China has granted the firm a positive corporate reputation in the country. "Buying more products in China means more job opportunities, which helps the firm win not only the government's hearts, but also the customers' appreciations," said Wang Yao, director of information department under the China General Chamber of Commerce. In the United States, poor people find it possible to afford cheap "Made In China" products for their daily necessities, Wang said. Wal-Mart, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, entered China in 1996. It has opened 39 stores, including supercenters, "Sam's Clubs" and neighborhood markets in 15 cities around China, including Beijing, Harbin and Dalian. It has recently announced the opening of its first store in Shanghai, slated for the middle of next year. The firm has a total of 4,900 stores in 10 countries worldwide.

The 1997 NET Act prohibits willfull participation in the "reproduction or distribution" of copyrighted works without permission, when that activity is not covered by fair use rights. Which P2P filesharing isn't. You could be fined up to $250K AND spend 3 years in jail. No biggie. John Ashcroft began serving warrants in July of 2003. Just because you haven't seen it in your local newspaper doesn't mean it isn't happening. The best part is, YOU'LL be liable for it too. You keep telling your son that stealing things he should be buying is OK and thinking that he's well adjusted because of it. You're the one taking food off the plates of the union employees who work on those films and depend on people being honest enough to attend theaters, rent the videos at the local store, or purchase a legal licensed copy from a reputable retailer. But I'm the miserable hateful prick. 1

And tell me what brethren you're talking about that he's screwing over? And in what industry? Do you even know? He's a skilled tradesman. A lot of tradesmen belong to unions. We get it Darin, you're anti-union. We're not. We reap union benefits, you don't. So what? Are you jealous or something? I guess you're not so smart after all. Just a miserable prick with nothing to add to a thread as usual. You can't even stay on topic. Pitiful and pathetic as you are, you do need help. You're a very ugly person, Darin. 1
