BuffOrange Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 It seems like Altidore does everything except put the ball in the net. Seems like he can neither pass or shoot well. Aren't those things a big part of his job? Overall it seems this game they go down only when hurt. I've seen three writhings so far, in the 50 or so minutes I have watched, one for a recklass tackle, deservedly USA player got booked. The second was a nasty and cynicle raking of a players leg by a US player who was deservedly booked. The third was an accidental kick to the chest, which Tim Howard saw and got the ball kicked out. Ghana are not really a team which goes in for theatrics, and the quality of the game as a viewer is much approved. (It is, BTW, one of the reasons I respect the US team. Pansies need not apply). Yah I have no problem with the way Ghana played. A couple lame moves perhaps but better than your average Euro/South American team theatrics. Well, I figured it was only a matter of time before Bonehead Bocangegra FUGGED us in the arse. What a dumbass. Yah he blows. Whatever. At least we don't have to live in Ghana. Good point
Dan Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 What a disappointing ending. It was looking good in the 2d half after they got to 1-1, but they were simply outplayed for most of the game. They were a fun team to watch, but just had too few good defenders and too few guys who can finish. That's how it seemed to me. Maybe their legs just finally gave out, but they seemed out hustled. No ball control, very few shots on goal, and poor defense. I don't know much about soccer, but Ghana definitely looked like the better team out there for the vast majority of the game.
KD in CA Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Altidore just wasn't quite himself...he's usually a solid finisher from what I've seen, but he couldn't even make proper contact with the ball half the time. We've definitely made a lot of progress in terms of creating opportunities, but as Meazza pointed out, the defense just isn't ready for prime time. I don't know if he was hurt or what, but I thought he was particularly disappointing for the last 3 games.
ajzepp Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 I don't know if he was hurt or what, but I thought he was particularly disappointing for the last 3 games. Yeah, he didn't get much done given the opportunities that were there prior to today's match. He'll have time to redeem himself, though....he's still just a a kid.
ajzepp Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 Well at least you didn't get knocked out by Slovakia. Your WC might not get any better. Germany will lose tomorrow. Capello will have his team ready. I'm just not scared of England. I'm on the Alexi Lalas bandwagon with regard to his position that England has a few nice players but is otherwise very overrated. Rooney isn't a threat at all right now, and their overall team play has been mediocre at best. At least the Germans have had signs of busting out the offense, and that Wunderkind player we have....Ozil, or whatever his name is....might have a breakout match against the English. Besides, we get Klose back and he's much more of an offensive threat than anyone the English have right now. I'm going to call it as a 3-1 victory for the Germans!

Not a team for theatrics? Did you happen to catch extra time? What a pathetic piss poor display of sportsmanship. !@#$ ghana. I hope Uruguay wins 5-0. As for kickball, see you again in 2014.

But overall they were a lot better than most of the South Americans/Africa/Europe. From what little I have seen of the Germans they seem to be going back to that way again. Which is a shame as I have a grudging respect for them otherwise. Ho hum. Tomorrow is another of our clashes. Looking forward to it.
Magox Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Great finish on Ghanas second goal. He showed speed, strength (what a knock he took from Bocanegra), balance and a tremendous finish. They deserved the victory, although our boys should feel proud of the way they played this tournament.

linksfiend Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 My thoughts: - You folks are being a little harsh on the US for ball control. I thought their's was better than Ghana's. - However Ghana was quicker to loose balls and easily won the aerial game. Very identical to the '06 game - I have no idea why Bocanegra slowed down/pulled-up/gave-up when Gyan scored that goal. Awful. - And yes, Altidore was terrible in this tournament. Official stats are: 8 shots, 3 on target, 0 goals in 357 minutes played

How bout that dumbass who called for the stretcher, sat up on the thing while they carried him off the pitch, and then STOOD UP as soon as he was on the sidelines As for the Germans, there are two main factors leading to their regression: They are immature and they no longer have Klinsmann at the helm. Klinsmann doesn't tolerate that crap, and I don't know enough about the current coach to say if he does or doesn't. But they are a very young team, I know that much.

boyst Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 WOOHOO USA is out of it which means less coverage on ESPN and less of a chance to hear those annoying horns as I turn from station to station! Although, I wanted the US to win just to make every other country feel like shiz. I mean, soccer is what; our 11th most popular sport with revenue trailing NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, PBA, PBR (Bull riding, and no joke, it's on about every weekend on ESPN2 with packed arena's), NHRA, NASCAR, Boxing, and MMA...so, yeah. Just saying, but the base of fans for soccer do not support it here. The ultimate joke would be the US winning the cup. It is already funny that women's soccer seems to get more attention than men as it is...
ajzepp Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 Capello my friend. He will have this team ready. As the old saying goes, he wins everywhere he goes. We'll have to come up with some friendly wager terms in the next 15 hrs or so....lol No WAY is England gonna beat the Germans.

ajzepp Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 Would you like me to pull up the posts from 2006? So far you're 0-1 lol, I know dammit....but the current English team is a far cry from the '06 Azzuri! I just can't see them winning...I don't care who their coach is!

Klinsmann doesn't tolerate that crap, and I don't know enough about the current coach to say if he does or doesn't. But they are a very young team, I know that much. In his day Klinsmann was infamous for his theatrics, as was the whole German team. He played in the EPL for a while and that whole aspect of his game disappeared, which was a relief as he was class to watch. You are right about him getting the whole diving aspect cut out when he was the German manager, which made them a nice outfit to watch. In fact in 2006 it seemed the whole German nation was against that sort of crap, considering the grief the Portugese got in their last game.

England has sucked in the group stages since I can remember, apart from the World Cup in Spain a long time ago. They were pretty awful even when they reached the QFs/Semis/won the thing. If the England from qualifying (who looked really, really good, hammering some good teams on the way (and in most of those games the scoreline flattered the defeated teams) with their only loss coming when they were reduced to 10-men) turn up then I suspect the Germans are going to find this difficult. If England play like they have, this tournament, then they are probably doomed. If they play like they have been doing for the rest of the last couple of years then Germany should be the ones catching the plane back to Europe. BTW I thought the US was crying out for a defender of the calibre of Lalas, he was a really class player when he was at his peak.
