Drey Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 buddy, please read this through carefully. he hasn't received one cent of the bonus money. jw Pal, I'm not talking about the $2M roster bonus. I'm talking about the signing bonus he got when he inked this contract extension that he's not going to honor now. If you're telling me that he didn't get that, then I will happily stop thinking of him as money-grubbing. I'm sticking with selfish, however.
PDaDdy Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 WTF?You think he's worried about fan backlash? Hell, you're proof the "silent strategy" has already failed. And Peters was so "hurt" by fan backlash, he's one of the highest paid LT in the league. Really? While everyone else here is giving him "lip service" to his naughty bits I am the lone dissenting voice that thinks that this is BS.....SO....I think yes from a PR stand point Schobels silent strategy is working to PERFECTION! Everyone thinks he is the good guy or at least not the bad guy here. Peters just trying to get fair compensation for his services was called everything under the sun. Schobel has made a position of weakness weaker and it's OK because we needed more LB anyway. Peters makes a position of weakness weaker and he is a prick. Where is the objectivity? Who said Peters was hurt? I didn't BUT I imagine that he was. This is part of the problem the guy is a human being. To vilify him to the point where people made personal attacks about his work ethic and tremendous accomplishment of going from a crappy TE pick to a pro bowl LT and assumed that he felt nothing is just another example of what I am trying to illustrate. Schobel is the family man who is doing the right thing and Peters was a lazy greedy bastard. Last I checked Peters attended more OTAs than the golden boy Schobel. To be 100% honest for me this was just an exercise and test of human nature and an attempt to point out some rather obvious hypocrisy. Honestly I think BOTH guys were at times selfish and at times both guys displayed good talent. For the life of me I can't tell why Peters was seen as a villain and Schoble is the golden boy. At least Peters skipped OTAs because that is what happens in the business of the NFL when you have a contract dispute. It was just business...everyone made it personal. Schobel made a personal decision that he didn't want to go that extra mile, be a team player and show up for OTAs but nobody took it personally. Schobel made demands he didn't deserve and people make excuses for why it was ok for him to do that. Peters made demands that quite honestly he did deserve and people wanted to run him out of town. I call BS.
PDaDdy Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Kelly, if that is your name: yes/no? jw No...my name is not Kelly. Assuming I understood your question. LOL
Kelly the Dog Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I will agree to disagree on the being on Schobel's side or not. What I still contend you haven't answered the questions that I posed directly. There was some side stepping. There was explanation but no answer. I asked yes or no questions. I saw no yes or no answers. OMG you mean the organization isn't caving in to a player to set his own practice schedule and work out routine. That's never happened before. Again to the questions I have asked what has he done to deserve even the consideration for such special treatement. There have been maybe a handful of football players EVER in the ENTIRE history of the NFL who deserve to make such a bold ultimatum. Schobel ISN'T EVEN CLOSE to being one of them. This is part of why I consider him a selfish prick he actually had the gall, the arrogance to ask for that kind of special treatment. Supposedly the OTA dodger has earned the right? WHAT A JOKE!!!! I will go out on a limb and say that you make no such explanations and excuses for Peters who I did support because we were screwing him out of his paycheck. Contracts mean nothing in the NFL. Some people can't get their heads around what that means "figuratively" others can't. The Bills had the same deal with TO last year that Schobel is asking for, and made it with him before he even played a down on the Bills, not nine years. But keep talking nonsense, it looks good on you. And I already told you that I supported Peters and what he did the last time you asked, although it is not the same as Schobel. You do an amazing job of asking questions, I answer them immediately, and then you complain I don't answer them. next time you go out on a limb, please don't forget to take that extra step. If you want specific answers to those foolish questions you asked previously, the answers are as follows: 1. I told you already. 2. They're voluntary and he was always prepared. 3. You're dead wrong, he didnt do that. 4. That's just plain stupid on your part. 5. No one is. 6. I don't think that has any bearing on anything.

If you're telling me that he didn't get that, then I will happily stop thinking of him as money-grubbing. I'm sticking with selfish, however. oh, my mistake. here's essentially what happened. entering the 2007 season, Aaron Schobel had 3 years left on his contract when the Bills approached him to redo the deal. over the final three seasons of his deal at that time, he was scheduled to make about $8 million. under the terms of the new deal, he was guaranteed $20 million (not including bonuses). essentially, what he received was a $12 million raise. given that he was a pass-rushing specialist coming off his first Pro Bowl appearance, he got essentially market value. and the deal is HEAVILY back-loaded. through the past three years, he earned $5.75 million in base salary. if he is such a money-grubber as you say, why wouldn't he stick around and attempt to collect the $27.525 million in base salary he is due over the next four seasons -- includuing a "modest" $6.025 million this year? yeah, that's greed for you. a guy stands to make $8 million this year, and he's not sure if he wants to come back. and here's what's worse: upon signing the deal, Schobel then ripped the city of Buffalo by saying, and I quote: "I like it here. This is my kind of style. I'm a small-town guy. I like the organization, I like the fans." jw

You answer yes or no questions with statements. What, did you respond with formulas and equations on essay questions? Try reading the directions. LOL. I would indeed be interested in knowing what deal TO asked for and that Schobel's request was the same. Do you have a link as I have never seen any detail regarding TOs deal and that Schobel wanted the same. Not that Schobel is statistically the 2nd best DE ever who is a sure fire hall of famer but hey if someone else is getting preferential treatment selfish people will ask for it too deserving or not. You might have missed my last point about this being something of an exercise and a test of human nature. I actually have no problem with you at all if you support both guys. Heck I would be fine with someone not really liking either but accepting it was their choice. What I don't get is the people who like Schobel and hate Peters. I know there situations aren't exactly the same and their reasons for missing OTAs and things are different but it was worth discussing. I really don't dislike Schobel as much as it seems and I want him back with the team but in shape and knowledgeable of the defense. At the same time I think he boned us a bit by waffling.

I really don't dislike Schobel as much as it seems and I want him back with the team but in shape and knowledgeable of the defense. At the same time I think he boned us a bit by waffling. I understand where both of them were coming from. People here, I assume, differentiate Peters from Schobel because the Bills gave Peters a chance as an UDFA, then renegotiated his contract, and then, after one very good season he wanted to renegotiate it again, to become one of the top 2-3 paid players at his position in the game. They thought he didn't pay his dues. Schobel, on the other hand, was a second round pick and immediately outplayed his contract for a few years. By the time this thing came around, he had worked his ass off for the Bills for nine consecutive years. Now he is willing to walk away from $40 million, and not demand (and hold out) for $60 million. The two are barely comparable, and you're seemingly grouping them as the same because they both missed OTAs, even though you "say" you know it's a little different.
Drey Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 oh, my mistake. here's essentially what happened...jw Thanks for the info. I'm going to have to disagree with your line of reasoning and still consider him money-grubbing, however, because people on message boards should never admit when they're wrong.
DrDawkinstein Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 im not at all surprised with his statements, and dont really care. i liked schobel while he was here. he was always a solid contributor on a weak D-line. he earned every cent he made, and while he had a mini-hold out, it was never to the extreme that some players around the league take it. him not coming back doesnt really matter to this team right now because our entire defense is changing, and i dont think theyll be much different with him or without him. if he was looking for a time to leave, this is actually the best scenario and timing for both sides. hopefully, we can trade him for something. i wish him the best, and im ready to move on.
The Dean Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Man. You must not have done to well in school. Clearly he paid better attention than you in his English classes.

Eh. It would be nice to get something for him. I suspect that he really is ready to retire OR play for another team. I don't think he will play for the Bills. If he does have a change of heart and he decides to play for us he won't know the play book. He won't have taken advantage of the new, nfl worthy, strength and conditioning program and might not be very effective anyway. For what we would likely be paying him he likely won't perform up to that level.

I agree it is likely he will retire, but if he doesn't I would be he is a positive addition (as always) and will know the play book. His history gives no reason to suspect otherwise.

As Kelly already noted, his primary responsibility in the new D would likely be as a pass rusher. No new trick there, that's what he has been doing for years. I can virtually guarantee he would be better at that than the last OLB to make the roster.
Lurker Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 As Kelly already noted, his primary responsibility in the new D would likely be as a pass rusher. No new trick there, that's what he has been doing for years. OLBs, even if they're primarily used to rush the QB, do have some pass coverage and recognition responsibilities that Schobel would have to learn. I doubt he'd be interested in returning, for that reason alone at this stage of his career...
Kelly the Dog Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 OLBs, even if they're primarily used to rush the QB, do have some pass coverage and recognition responsibilities that Schobel would have to learn. I doubt he'd be interested in returning, for that reason alone at this stage of his career... They do. But it pretty much goes without saying that when Schobel would be in the game, he would be the Bryce Paup blitz pretty much every play guy. And for years, since LeBeau was here, both Schobel and Kelsay have dropped back into coverage on zone blitz schemes. It's not completely foreign. IMO just learning the playbook and defensive calls and assignments would be harder for him than the few times he was asked to cover a RB or TE more than 5 yards down the field.
Lurker Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 And for years, since LeBeau was here, both Schobel and Kelsay have dropped back into coverage on zone blitz schemes. Yeah, but that was basicly running to a spot to disrupt thowing lanes, rather than actual coverage responsibility. I could see a lot smart OC's and QB's taking advantage of Schobel's blizt-first usage if he was not a credible threat to defend the dump pass. Better to retire when its time than leave on less than ideal terms, so I wish Aaron well....
