Lynch-Goal Line Specialist?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading alot of posters that say IF Marshawn is a Bill this year he will be our short yardage/goal line specialist.

Is it just me or does anybody else have a problem with that? I've watched him dance around looking for holes for years now. He isn't effective on the goal line, not thus far in his career. I think Freddy is better at finding a crease and squeezing in the rock for a TD or have CJ used on a misdirection and then out run people to the pylon, but Lynch as our short yardage goal line back would be a mistake. I think that if he ever does show up to camp Chan will be able to figure it out also. I hope to God he is traded soon for a second that we send to Baltimore for their LT Gaither. But if Lynch is on our team this year I doubt he will be counted on to punch it in from 1 yard out.

What do you guys think?

Lynch is great when you give him an obvious hole to run through. When he gets going, he is tough to bring down. he is a good open field runner too, but he has trouble finding the hole sometimes. Jauron ran him on the stretch play again and again, and it was a misuse of his talents, because he doesnt have great vision.

I was a running back. Some plays are standard, and Lynch doesnt seem to understand the blocking schemes and follow his blockers. I wonder if he even listens to the playcall sometimes. Jackson does not suffer from that problem.

I agree with your point, but people why would the Ravens possibly want Lynch when they have Ray Rice/McGahee/McClain. Not only that but the odds they trade us Gaither for a player at a position they don't need are slim/none and slim left town.

I don't think that the Ravens would ever deal for ML in a Gaither trade. But it would be fun to imagine how Ray Lewis would respond to a temperamental Marshawn who refused to come to the practice field because he was having an "attitude" day. Ray Lewis would kick his behind in and then grab his braided dreadlocks and drag him to the practice field. Mr. Ray would tell ML to shut up and start working out with the team. The very badly bruised Marshawn Lynch would meekly respond with a yes sir.

Im sorry but did you guys not see how many times Freddy was stuff of short yardage last year? It was almost every time. I for one was so pissed every time they gave it to him when Lynch was on the bench. I can only think of one short yardage play that Lynch didnt make regardless of how little a hole there was.

Considering the touches each back got in that situation (Freddy getting more) the proof is in the stats:

Lynch 10 tds last 2 years, Jackson 5 - with both having two this past season. Lynch by my memory had many less attempts this past year too, and I rememeber jackson failing more than succeeding.

Thoner, Kingfish posted this a few days ago:

"Lynch scored more TDs because he has had far more "and goal" carries then Fred Jackson has. Over his career Marshawn has had 46 "and goal" carries and has converted 10 (21.7%) of them while Freddy has 18 "and goal" carries and converted on 3 attempts (16.7%).

He's better than Freddy around the goal line but not by that much."

I bring this up because it has suddenly become popular to state that Marshawn is a vastly superior short yardage and goal line runner than Fred is. However if you take Marshawn's 21.7% and factor that into Freddy's 18 "and goal" carries, Freddy would have only 1 more touchdown than he did (4 to 3).

Kingfish further pointed out:

"If you go to Lynch or Jackson's Yahoo profile and look under situational stats you can find it. Another interesting stat of Lynch's in 2009 was how fast he wore down after his 5th carry-

Carries 1-5, 5.0 YPC

6-10, 2.7 YPC

11-15, 2.5 YPC

16-20, 2.5 YPC

Compared to Freddy

1-5, 3.8

6-10, 4.5

11-15, 4.8

16-20, 3.1

21-25, 6.8

26-30, 10.4

31+, 2.3

And people think it's no big deal that Lynch isn't reporting to "voluntary" OTA's when conditioning clearly derailed his 2009 season?"

This last point seems to underscore the long held belief that Lynch was in bad physical condition last year and raises the legitimate concern that his non-participation in OTAs might be a recipe for again being out of shape.

Also this last point seems to be one of two points that fans disagree upon.

Some people here show no concern about Lynch's conditioning, even though it was an issue last year.

Many of these same people think that Lynch will be able to catch up on the offensive playbook without limiting the offense when he's in the game…or that he'll not screw up on audibles…and that he'll be a mentally mistake-free football player…making the same pre-snap reads as his teammates, etc.

Many of us disagree with these assumptions and are very concerned about the effect that missing all these OTAs will have on Lynch both from a conditioning standpoint and also from the standpoint of being a mental asset to the team instead of a mental liability.

Well, if you're going to have a goal line specialist, the main prerequisite is that you are AT the goal line! That sure hasn't happened much the past few seasons. Seriously, I think the key to goal line situations is to have MULTIPLE weapons so that the defense cannot key on one guy. I think the Bills may have more of that this year provided Lynch shows up and starts taking his career seriously. And even if he doesn't I think Nix/Gailey are going to find (and may have already) guys who can replace Lynch. Until the pads go on, we just won't know what they have back there other than Spiller & Jackson.

Guess I wasn't clear on original post. I don't think Baltimore will trade Lynch for Gaither. I hope that any of 31 NFL teams might give up a 2nd so that we can use that pick to get Gaither.

Good stuff.

Does anyone really believe Lynch is bright enough to walk in and pick up the new offense? His jersey number is a multiple of his IQ.
