DC Tom Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 And to build off the Gibson theme what about Braveheart and We Were Soliders. 140938 I know a couple of Vietnam vets who had flashbacks and came out of the theater in tears after watching "We Were Soldiers", it was that realistic to them.
Alaska Darin Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Did you ever watch it in German with subtitles? 140952 Nah, his dorkness is waiting for them to do it in Farsi - so he can learn it while he watches.
DC Tom Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Whaddya mean no one mentioned Das Boot....I did above...maybe u have me on ignore... 140953 Lighten up, Francis. I was typing while you posted. No one had mentioned it when I started replying.
Alaska Darin Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Lighten up, Francis. I was typing while you posted. No one had mentioned it when I started replying. 140958 STRIPES!
DC Tom Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 One no one's mentioned is Das Boot. The director's cut, in particular. Very accurate portrayal of life on a German U-boat in WWII. 140948 Did you ever watch it in German with subtitles? 140952 No, I never bothered with the subtitles.
IDBillzFan Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 I'm surprised no one has mentioned Deer Hunter. I think that classifies as a war movie, though maybe not in the traditional sense of being in combat from start to finish. I remember being very disturbed by that flick.
dib Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Did you ever watch it in German with subtitles? 140952 No, I never bothered with the subtitles. 140965 arsloche.
R. Rich Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 STRIPES! 140961 All I know is that I finally get to kill somebody.
DC Tom Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 No, I never bothered with the subtitles. 140965 arsloche. 140977
MattyT Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 A good war-time movie that no one mentioned is Tigerland. Not really a war movie, but it takes place in boot camp. Something different anyway. 140885 I'll second Tigerland....unless he only likes movies that glorify war.
todd Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Saving Private Ryan are my favorites. 140816 I'll second that. Apocolypse Now is also a classic.
_BiB_ Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Everyone has hit on most of the good ones. I would add "Battle of Britain" w/ Michael Cain and "The Blue Max" with George Peppard. Between the two some of the best aerial scenes ever filmed.
_BiB_ Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Oh, forgot "12 O'Clock High" as well. Another classic.
John Adams Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Band of Brothers is incredible. On the rare occasion that catches me channel surfing, any time an episode is on HBO, I stop and watch.
Beerball Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 A couple that haven't been mentioned: Glory Memphis Belle 140915 Memphis Belle...I enjoyed that one too.
Beerball Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 The Boys In Company C is another great one. 140945 I actually preferred the Girls in Company S, but I digress.
OnTheRocks Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Bridge on the River Kwai Great Escape and just for kicks.... Chicken Run (it has a lot of "Great Escape" scenes)
