DC Tom
And to build off the Gibson theme what about Braveheart and We Were Soliders. 140938 I know a couple of Vietnam vets who had flashbacks and came out of the theater in tears after watching "We Were Soldiers", it was that realistic to them. Alaska Darin
Did you ever watch it in German with subtitles? 140952 Nah, his dorkness is waiting for them to do it in Farsi - so he can learn it while he watches.

DC Tom
One no one's mentioned is Das Boot. The director's cut, in particular. Very accurate portrayal of life on a German U-boat in WWII. 140948 Did you ever watch it in German with subtitles? 140952 No, I never bothered with the subtitles. IDBillzFan
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Deer Hunter. I think that classifies as a war movie, though maybe not in the traditional sense of being in combat from start to finish. I remember being very disturbed by that flick. MattyT
A good war-time movie that no one mentioned is Tigerland. Not really a war movie, but it takes place in boot camp. Something different anyway. 140885 I'll second Tigerland....unless he only likes movies that glorify war.

todd
Full Metal Jacket, Platoon and Saving Private Ryan are my favorites. 140816 I'll second that. Apocolypse Now is also a classic.
_BiB_
Everyone has hit on most of the good ones. I would add "Battle of Britain" w/ Michael Cain and "The Blue Max" with George Peppard. Between the two some of the best aerial scenes ever filmed.
_BiB_
Oh, forgot "12 O'Clock High" as well. Another classic.
John Adams
Band of Brothers is incredible. On the rare occasion that catches me channel surfing, any time an episode is on HBO, I stop and watch.
