PIZ Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 The guy loves war movies, but I'm not sure what to get him. He's already getting Band of Brothers from his wife. Are there any good ones that are out? Any classics that every one likes?

Mark VI Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 David Lean directed two classics I'm partial to... Bridge on the River Kwai Lawrence of Arabia
Guest Guest Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Pick up the "Band of Brothers" box set - one of the best WWII movies I've ever seen. "Saving Private Ryan" is a classic too...
Beerball Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 How about something classic but offbeat? Apocalypse Now has some good sh-- in it. Others I like that are war related... Bridge over the River Kwai 1941 Ken Burns Civil War series is really really good Saving Private Ryan already mentioned sh--
flomoe Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Saving Private Ryan is always a good one. If you're interested, try a search on Google for a series called "Victory at Sea". It's not a movie but a rather lengthy documentary with dozens of episodes on WWII. I'm not sure of the cost but it might be something that he would be interested in. Movie Favorites List not in any particular order: Midway (good cast) Flying Leathernecks Wake Island The Bridge at Remagen Battle of the Bulge (good cast) Air Force Tora Tora Tora The Longest Day (good cast) To Hell and Back Anzio Hell is for Heroes (good cast) A Bridge Too Far (good cast) Bataan Wackiest Ship in the Army (funny) Where Eagles Dare The Eagle has Landed The Great Escape Von Ryan's Express Command Decision
stuckincincy Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 A German film, "die Brucke" (The Bridge) is a good one. It's about some young teens inducted into the German army in the waning days, defending a bridge. And the classic, "all Quiet on the Western Front".
pm73 Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 The Great Escape. 140823 This is my favorite.
Rico Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 The Battle of Algiers, nice new Criterion release.

Bear Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 A good war-time movie that no one mentioned is Tigerland. Not really a war movie, but it takes place in boot camp. Something different anyway.
dib Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 RED DAWN 140900 forgot about that one, and add- By Dawn's Early light. B-52 crew during a nuclear war.
USMCBillsFan Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Besides the obvious ones, The Big Red 1 is good too.
Alaska Darin Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Let me second "Band of Brothers". Amazing stuff and the standard for all mini-series that follow.
R. Rich Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 Paths of Glory. One of Stanley Kubrick's best films.
