T master Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Since our beloved Bills inception in 1960 - 50 years ago the Bills have had 18 different Head Coaches - of which 2 had been head coach - fired and brought back for a second go round . Those 2 being Lou Saban "62 - 65" & "72 - 75" , the other was Harvey Johnson , he was made head coach in 1968 after Joe Collier was let go by Ralph , then fired at the end of that season & brought back in "71", both being losing seasons . Out of the Bills 50 years - they have made 17 playoff appearances , & of those 17 -- 10 of them we were Division Champions either , AFC - AFC east & or AFL titles . Not to bad . Then of coarse we all know about the Superbowl thing . (If not 4 appearances no rings:doh: ) but the closest Superbowl ever played 1990 when ever i hear wide right it still kills me !!!! During the Bills 50 years we had 5 different coaches that put a winning product on the field during their tenure . I believe we all know who the winningest coach in Bills history is ---- Marv Levy ! The others were Lou Saban - which of all the seasons he coached he only turned in one season "72" that was below 500 winning percentage & he was the only one to bring the 2 AFL Championships to Buffalo (& his name isn't on the ring of fame ). Next in line & you won't believe it - this Head coach never finished below .500 in the 3 seasons he coached , but was fired, & most Bills fans (this one being one of those fans) think he made one of the dumbest moves in Bills history in a free agent signing & putting him in a game that doused any deep playoff hopes that year & will go down in Bills lore as "The Music City Miracle" yep - Wade Phillips never finished below 500. But the Johnson - Flutie thing he'll never live down !!! Chuck Knox had 2 good years for the Bills - "80" & "81" . Then Jim Ringo had a winning season in 1966 Oh & Mularkey had one good year !! (Can't forget him : ) I won't go to far into the losing seasons cause i wouldn't want to send any of you over the edge , and i really hate to say it but Jauron was one of the more respectable coaches in our history believe it or not ---- NOT . That being said the coach with the worst year ever in Bills history was none other than ------- yes Harvey Johnson -- in 1971 he took the bills to a 1 - 13 record in his second go round . he did do better in his first season he took the team to a 1-12-1 season so yes he is the Bills worst coach ever !!!! The teams player that represents the best & worst of memories all in one -------- O.J. !!!!! Just thought i'd throw that in to cheer you all up !!! Well i don't know if any of you really care about any of this but i had fun looking into this stuff & if you don't but i thought some of us might like to know a little more about the team we support !!! GO BILLS !!!!!
nucci Posted May 20, 2010 Posted May 20, 2010 Not a bad read but a couple of questions. Which FA signing was the dumb one Phillips made? If you are talking about Johnson, Butler traded for him. Also may be a misprint but don't get Ringo had a winning season in 1966. Ringo was 0-9 in 1976 and 3-11 in 1977. Collier was coach in 1966.

Sorry your right got my 66 & 76 mixed up & also thought Johnson was a FA , that pisses me off even more to know that they lost all that money & what ever for the trade .
SouthernMan Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 What's your point? Just to clarify a misconception that a few fans may still have - the quarterback decision for the Music City Miracle game, in which Johnson got the nod over Flutie, was not made by Wade. It's been intimated and whispered for years, and I believe even confirmed by Phillips himself, that the decision came directly from Ralph C Wilson. He had greatly overpaid for Johnson, and as luck would have it, Johnson played about his best game ever the previous week in a meaningless match against the Colts. Ralph got excited, and made the call.
