I'll Take 1-15 (Winning The Home Opener)

Recommended Posts

I have absolutely ZERO problem winning one game (I'll take the opener because that day should never be tainted) this year if it looks like the team can hang with most of their competition (especially the AFC East). Re-building is fine and I would much rather prefer getting a top level QB in next year's draft than missing out going 5-11.

Ideally, I would love to see the line get in sync for 2011 when the real future of this team is waiting for us in that draft. Hopefully QB will be the only glaring need once this year is over. Figure out the rest of the team until that happens and if Brohm, Edwards or Jones miraculously saves us, so be it......

I am thinking we can still go 8-8 and still get a franchise QB. So this would be nice because it would we would break out of that 7-9 shell (and the 6-10), and we get a franchise QB.

I feel the next draft is when we make a big attempt to get a franchise QB, even if we have to trade up in the first round like the jets did with sanchez. It is too early to tell, but there seems to be a lot of QB talent in the next draft.

And I also have to admit, I have this fear that LT is going to be a problem for us for awhile.

I'm looking at the seaon this way: If we suck and win 1-4 games then we'll get a chance at our overdue stud QB. But if Chan and Company work their magic and we do well, then all is good. Good, promising season of a franchise QB. I feel good. I feel good.

I'd rather get as many wins as we can. Drafting a QB in the top 10 of the draft is very risky business. Here is a list of the QBs taking in the top 10 of round one since 1980. Pro Football Refernce Top 10 QBs

Year Rnd Pick

2009 1 1 Matthew Stafford

2009 1 5 Mark Sanchez

2008 1 3 Matt Ryan

2007 1 1 JaMarcus Russell

2006 1 3 Vince Young

2006 1 10 Matt Leinart

2005 1 1 Alex Smith

2004 1 1 Eli Manning

2004 1 4 Philip Rivers

2003 1 1 Carson Palmer

2003 1 7 Byron Leftwich

2002 1 1 David Carr

2002 1 3 Joey Harrington

2001 1 1 Michael Vick

1999 1 1 Tim Couch

1999 1 2 Donovan McNabb

1999 1 3 Akili Smith

1998 1 1 Peyton Manning

1998 1 2 Ryan Leaf

1995 1 3 Steve McNair

1995 1 5 Kerry Collins

1994 1 3 Heath Shuler

1994 1 6 Trent Dilfer

1993 1 1 Drew Bledsoe

1993 1 2 Rick Mirer

1992 1 6 David Klingler

1990 1 1 Jeff George

1990 1 7 Andre Ware

1989 1 1 Troy Aikman HOF

1987 1 1 Vinny Testaverde

1987 1 6 Kelly Stouffer

1986 1 3 Jim Everett

1983 1 1 John Elway HOF

1983 1 7 Todd Blackledge

1982 1 4 Art Schlichter

1982 1 5 Jim McMahon

1981 1 6 Rich Campbell

Lots of scary names in there. I would only want about 25% of them as my franchise quarterback with the hind sight we now have.

That's exactly why I wouldn't mind a top 5 pick with the QBs in 2011......

I don't like this mentality at all. Winning is what it's all about.

If you're a NFL GM taking over a rebuilding project, you can't be afraid to fail based on previous bust picks. Bill Polian watched every throw Peyton Manning took at Tennessee and made sure of himself. People make it seem like he was lucky, but I disagree.

That said, there are three types of teams in the NFL: title contenders, the average-mediocre teams, and the rebuilding ones. Buffalo fits squarely into the third category and will probably be about 3-13 when the season is done. People forget that SD took a good QB in 2001, even though his best years were/are in NO.

How is a 1-15 team competitive?
