Because it takes a lot more than physical skill to be an NFL QB, that's why.

If he doesn't get his **** together rapidly, show some sign of promise, then cut him. If he shows any potential, dump Fitz. I would rather have a potential starter on the roster (even one who is quite frankly terrible to date) than a guy we know is at best a #2. Russell actually scored a 24 on the wonderlic, so he isn't a complete idiot. Is it likely he will develop? No. Worth taking a shot? Yes IMO.

You could make the same argument for every single draft bust and fill your training camp with losers who haven't ever got their sh-- together or shown any sign of promise.

Hey, we need WR help too, where's Charles Rogers? He's certainly worth a shot...if he doesn't show any promise we can always cut him.

Where is the downside? The upside is huge. I seriously doubt it would work out, but why not give it a shot? We aren't going to contend for a Super Bowl this year no matter what.

1. Skills - JR does NOT have NFL level QB skills. If he did, Oaklawn wouldn't have thrown him into the street.

2. Development - Leave it up to Chan. Right, like JR has nothing to do with his own development.

3. Need - JR is NOT a competitor. He doesn't like to work. We don't need lazy players at any position. He is the antithetical prototype of the kind of player that Nix and Gailey want here.

4. Money - A fool and his money are soon parted. JR took plenty of Al's moolah. Ridiculous that the author says, "If it doesn't work out, Buffalo can just release Russell at little cost." Undercuts the premise of "Why The Bills should sign him" - don't 'cha think? That Raiders contract is void. He cleared waivers and is free to sign with any team for any amount of money. Why exactly do you think he'd want to go to Buffalo? What would compel him?

5. Potential - He's only 24. Well, he'll be 44 and still rich and clueless in another two decades.

The downside is wasting coaches' time and effort, wasting money, and creating unknown locker room issues. There is enough QB uncertainly as it is -- adding more sh--y options to a sh--y situation doesn't help.

And how exactly is his upside "huge"? The guy sucks, he has always sucked. He doesn't offer any upside. The fact that the Raiders were dumb enough to be duped by another overhyped, college QB who maxed out stats playing on a loaded team does not mean he has upside. Does Charles Rogers also offer huge upside at WR?

Ah, locker room issues is a valid point, but frankly I could care less if Edwards gets his ego bruised. IMO he needs to man up this season, no matter the distractions, if he wants to be our starter. Brohm should care less, he was on a practice squad last season. Yes, he has sucked in the NFL. I completely agree. His upside though, if he can become merely adequate at passing the football (something we do not have atm at QB), he brings a huge asset to the Offense.

Like the Brohm supporters do just about every day?

And taking time away from the developing skills of other players (not necessarily QBs) that you've decided are more reliable, with higher upsides, or who are our present QBs and need all the coach's attention they can get.

While there are a number of late-bloomer QBs, those guys are almost universally late round picks who spent a few years on the bench. Most first-round picks who bust with their original team go on to fail with other teams, or at best, develop into marginal starters/decent backups. Here's the list of first-round QBs who were cut by the original team/traded in disgrace/let go:

1.) JaMarcus Russell

2.) Brady Quinn

3.) Jason Campbell

4.) J.P. Losman

5.) Kyle Boller

6.) Rex Grossman

7.) Byron Leftwich

8.) David Carr

9.) Joey Harrington

10.) Patrick Ramsey

11.) Michael Vick

12.) Tim Couch

13.) Akili Smith

14.) Cade McCown

15.) Ryan Leaf

16.) Jim Druckenmiller

Is there anyone on that list who proved valuable to his next team?

Russell has had much more opportunity to prove himself and has failed miserably. Brian, on the other hand, has not had the work. IMO, he looked decent in his first start, and with some time, good coaching, and hard work, he might be able to reach his potential. But he certainly hasn't had the opportunity to prove he sucks yet.
