DerrickO Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I was 17 and a senior in H.S. I only wish that I had enough money for season tickets back then and could have went to some playoff games at Rich Stadium. You're right, the Bills were really stacked with talent back then. I was also 17 and a senior in high school. It hurt so bad after that game......I still can't watch that game when it's on the NFL network. If only Hostetler fumbled the ball when Bruce had his arm. I HATE MY LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
T master Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 I just finished watching the 1991 Buffalo Bills that I DVR'd from the NFL network. I can't believe it's been nearly twenty years since we've had such a great team. Seeing Thurman Thomas' elusiveness & quickness, Jim Kelly throwing for long TD's, Andre Reed & James Lofton running for TD's, Bruce Smith getting sacks, Darryl Talley & Cornelius Bennett making plays, AFC Championship games in Buffalo...I miss those Bills teams of the 90's. Just stop i'm gettin wood !!!!
stevens273 Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 He missed a couple field goals earlier in the game. One at the end of regulation that would have won it. Thurman said if he missed the one in OT, they should throw Norwood out of the plane somewhere over North Dakota, lol. I was at that game in the LA Coliseum. Thankfully there were about 30K Bills fans there. It was the scariest place I've seen any sporting event. Doused with silly string during pre-game, that was from the nice folks. Literally feared for my safety after the game in a parking garage that took 2 hours to get out of.

Does anyone know if/when these might be repeated? Go Bills!
Numark Posted May 15, 2010 Posted May 15, 2010 people forget about the 99 team. While not as "good" as the team of the early 90s, they had a good chance of wining the SB that year but we all know what happened.
TheChimp Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I think Scotty was still reeling from missing the 47 yarder in the Superbowl. I met Scott twice at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern in Herndon, VA, the first time he was quiet and kind of guarded, guess he was trying to get a feel for how the Bills fans would react to him. The 2nd time, he was more open and having a good time with everyone. Overall, Scott is a good guy. There was no way a decently coached and well-rested Bills team shouldn't have had a 20-point lead going into the 4th Quarter, let alone get the poor kicker closer than !@#$ing 47 yards for the game-winner. And a team with some actual CLASS wouldn't have had that rally in the square the next day, where they patted Norwood on the shoulder and said in front of the whole city, "Hey, no way we're blaming you for that loss, you're still our guy", then immediately cut him. Not only did they completely disrespect Norwood, but they disrespected the game of football, and the three embarassing losses that followed were their just desserts.

Yeah it's hard to believe that it's been that long. I still had family in Buffalo then and we went to games often. Sure miss those teams, but hopefully we will have more good days in the near future!

I will forever believe that had Bennett & Will Wolford stayed Bills for much longer/their entire careers, they'd be in the HOF now. Conlan & Ballard we're on their way there too, during their Bills days. Damn FA

Last Year Iwas in the Ralph parking lot after a loss ( I think it was the Browns Game) and my brother said wasn't it nice when it wasnt a question of if we were going to win but by how many..... I loved the 90's teams

Not only did they completely disrespect Norwood, but they disrespected the game of football, and the three embarassing losses that followed were their just desserts. I don't know why I am bothering, since it is obvious you have some sort of agenda, but your timeline is quite screwed up. They didn't dump the guy right after the miss in the superbowl. They kept him another season...during which he had the awful game against the Raiders, which was the starting point for this discussion of Norwood. And it was justified to get rid of Scotty when they did; everyone on the planet knew Christie was a vastly better and younger kicker with a much stronger leg. Need I remind you that while Norwood was an accurate short range kicker, he was pretty weak on kickoffs and as a result the Bills employed kickoff specialist Brad Daluiso in 1991. So they also gained a roster spot by making the move. Christie was a fantastic kicker, possibly in the top ten all time. I, like you, don't blame Norwood for the loss in SBXXV, but he wasn't anywhere near the kicker Christie was.
Red Squirrel Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I hate to engage in counterfactualization ("If", "Coulda", "Shoulda", "Woulda"), but I'll toss a bone that direction with your post. That 1999 team - I believe - COULD have done some damage. It COULD have been the Baltimore 2000 team, just one year earlier. Quarterback? Meh. Defense? Pick your adjective. Bone-breaking. Stout. Marginally legal. Oglethorpe. You're right. One hell of a team that year, but for one bad (yes, I'll say illegal) play. I wholeheartedly agree with the last line of your post, but some of the rest of it is revisionist history. Those late '90s Bills defenses were vastly better than the superbowl teams; Ted Washington in particular was a massive upgrade at NT. But those D's were not strong in the defensive backfield, and it showed up with a really obnoxious tendency of giving up 1st downs in long yardage situations. And to defend the QB a little bit...many of the losses, and much of the damage to his season, was done in games when the D didn't do anything. There was a two game stretch in the middle of the season against Oakland and Seattle when the D first got pushed around then got humiliated. The QB, admittedly not at his best when throwing 40-50 times a game, was further hampered by having his best WR hobbled with a bad hamstring, and the RB situation was a mess...Thurman injured, Smith fat, and Linton untalented. But meh, I know you don't want to hear those things....IF ONLY WE STARTED RJ THE WHOLE SEASON!!!! :wallbash:
thewildrabbit Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 As much as I love those late 80's- early 90's teams I simply can't watch them again on TV as it's just to depressing. I had season tix from 88-94 and enjoyed every minute of every game during those years, the Bills in 4 SB's was pretty amazing. As badly as I feel about those SB losses I simply can't imagine how Scott Norwood is coping with "wide right", it must still haunt him.
Corp000085 Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I'll love the memories, but I too cannot watch. It's an absolute crime that those Bills teams never won. I'll continue to go to the Hall of Fame ceremonies (for Reed, Tasker, Bill Polian, and hopefully Kent Hull), but I just can't stomach watching those teams absolutely dominate compared to what we have now, and especially knowing that they never won the Super Bowl.
Chalkie Gerzowski Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I enjoy watching the old games still. It's hard to believe there was a dominating team in town. Every Monday in the fall it was like... "ok, whose ass are we going to kick next Sunday?"
coseybedaman Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Yes its a shame what happened to Norwood. I totally agree that Christie was a better kicker and it was definitely time for him to go, but for too many years that super bowl loss was blamed on him. Give me a break. You have to give your kicker a better chance than a 47 yarder off grass. 90 percent of TODAYS stronger legged kickers cant make that kick. The shock that everyone had for that missed field goal should have been replaced with the shock that we couldnt get our kicker in range versus an inferior team

The shock that everyone had for that missed field goal should have been replaced with the shock that we couldnt get our kicker in range versus an inferior team Everyone forgets that one play earlier, Thurman Thomas was barely tripped up by the last Giants defender. If he stayed upright he would have gone to the house. The Bills lost not because of Norwood, but because of Marv Levy and Jim Kelly. Levy for not adjusting the game plan to counter Belichick, and Kelly for being too stubborn and egotistical to give Thurman the ball more, because Thomas was running roughshod over the Giants. No, Kelly wanted to be Super Bowl MVP and win it with the no-huddle K-gun. That's why we lost. PTR
Pyrocles Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Imagine if Lofton could have just picked up a little more speed on that long deflected pass that set up a first and goal early in XXV. "It's deflected, and CAUGHT by Lofton! He surges and strides, lunges into the endzone for the TOUCHDOWN! Seven nothing BUFFALO!" - my fantasy Super Bowl XXV Van Miller call. Or if Kelly's pass lead him just a little bit more to hit him over the shoulder instead of being deflected. Or if ONE player on the Bills defense could just tackle Mark Ingram on a 3rd and long dump-off. I still remember watching that game and hearing Dan Dierdorff's call "This game is starting out very nicely if you are a fan of the New York Giants."

Norwood wasn't cut right after. He kicked for the Bills the following year. Jeezzuz, get your facts straight. PTR
seq004 Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Yep nearly 20 since this org has produced anything worth a damn. I do feel Nix and Gailey will change that though I wish that was true:(
