The Alaska cruise is very cool - we did that back in '02 and had a GREAT time. The only downer was that we didn't get to see Hubbard Glacier -- one of the people on the ship had a heart attack so the ship had to leave to get by land. He ended up passing away. :w00t:

We did a Hawaii cruise too, where we left San Diego, went across the Pacific, spent a day on each island, then went back to San Diego. VERY relaxing and fun.

We'll have to keep Panama on the list, maybe for our next trip. It's official - we're going to the Mediterranean. A few days in Barcelona, two days in Cairo, and a day in Athens, Rhodes, Sicily, and Malta. Should be fun - we go in November.

Since you are going on a cruise ship, get your doctor to write a script for prophylactic antibiotics for the both of you.

I wouldn't go that far, but I would check into the passage times. I would assume that freighters and such have a higher priority than passenger ships.

Here in the states... On the say the inland fed locks... Passenger vessels have a higher priority than commercial cargo.

It goes:

1. US owned vessels, state, US contract vessels, etc...

2. Passenger vessels on a schedule or regularly operating in the "in hire" trade

3. Commercial cargo

4. Recreational vessels/fishing.

Now my father worked on the railroad back in the day and I think he said it was opposite... Freight would get higher priority... I guess they owned the tracks... :)

You would think that paying passengers would be a higher priority... Spread the good will and PR... Then again the locks in the states are free!

Sounds like a good time. Count down is on for the wife and I to fly to Hawaii and cruise the Islands. We head out on June 25.

After what I am going to post here... The Panama will seem pretty boring from a huge ship getting tugged in by a train or what not!

Oh Fez... You want to see locks and such... Stay Stateside or better yet, rent a houseboat and do the Trent-Severn or Rideau Canal up through Ontario etc... Even in Europe there are so many better canal tour (England/France, etc...) options. That is, if canals are your thing! :w00t::w00t:

Trent Severn

Rideau

So many cooler things like waterwheels, inclined planes, lift locks, marine railways, water chutes/slopes!

Falkirk Wheel

Peterborough Lift Lock Cruises

Stratford Upon Avon Canal

Worchester and Birminghman Canal

Just talked to my relief... He said his mother took the Panama Canal Cruise years back and said it was kinda boring.

He told his mother: "Why did you waste your money, I could have arranged you to go through the locks on the MS or here in Chicago!" :)

You wanna see locks and etc... Hit the city of Ottawa Canada... Panama to me would seem like a stinking commercial cesspool, IMO... Up there in Ontario, some construction dates back to the pre-portland cement days (early 1800's) and power days where lifts (head) were kept to about 5 feet because they had to be operated by hand crabs (like most of Europe when the world was in a canal building craze). That means beautiful works of engineering marvels with cut stone that has lasted the test of time! Some really beautiful flight locks...

Hit central Europe too...
