Panama Canal cruise?

Wife and I are thinking about doing a Panama Canal cruise in November. Has anyone been on such a cruise?

We've been on two cruises - one to Alaska, and one across the Pacific to/from Hawaii. Both were awesome.

Also, Panama might be far enough south to be less susceptible to hurricanes.

I think October is the big hurricane month, but November can be hit or miss in terms of weather.

Well, I think the ship goes from LA to Miami via the Canal. I suppose if there was bad weather near Miami, they'd just leave us out at sea longer.... Extending the vacation for free.....

Maybe November sounds good after all!

The downside is that I'd end up missing a Bills game or two... or is that a good thing?

Based on your review, my wife has apparently decided she doesn't want to go to Panama anymore.

Instead she wants to go to the Mediterranean - Barcelona, Athens, Rhodes, Cairo, and Malta. The price just went up, since airfare overseas is VERY expensive. Thanks a lot!:P

I actually said that to her yesterday -- why aren't we helping our own economy? Her counter was, "We don't have the Great Pyramids here." Tough to argue that one...

Neighbor went on one not to long ago. Luckily, they were able to "tag team" with another cruise liner and were able to go through during the day. Only the second time in 20 some passages that the captain managed that he was able to go through during daylight hours.

Hmm...you told us that the wife works with a non-profit outfit that tries to help folks. Which is good. Remind her of that, and tell her she should not be chasing personal thrills. :P

Oh, I hadn't realized that most ships go through at night. That would definitely be disappointing!

A friend of mine who took the trip recently said most ships only go partway through. But you can take a day excursion all the way through (and bus back to meet the ship). He definitely went in the daytime and said it, and the Alaska cruise, were the best cruises he ever took. (And this guy takes a LOT of cruises.)

The Alaska cruise is very cool - we did that back in '02 and had a GREAT time. The only downer was that we didn't get to see Hubbard Glacier -- one of the people on the ship had a heart attack so the ship had to leave to get by land. He ended up passing away. :w00t:

We did a Hawaii cruise too, where we left San Diego, went across the Pacific, spent a day on each island, then went back to San Diego. VERY relaxing and fun.

We'll have to keep Panama on the list, maybe for our next trip. It's official - we're going to the Mediterranean. A few days in Barcelona, two days in Cairo, and a day in Athens, Rhodes, Sicily, and Malta. Should be fun - we go in November.
