Rico Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Don't forget Jennifer Jason Leigh. Played some very interesting & varied roles, and has gotten naked in just about every one of them... always a plus.
Chalkie Gerzowski Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Piper Parker......no wait, Pippy Longstocking......
ATBNG Posted November 30, 2004 Author Posted November 30, 2004 I don't know if this entirely answers your question, but the best performance by an actress, bar none, was by Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice. If you have not seen it, it is amazing. 139441 I think Meryl Streep is fantastic, but she's not really current. She was in "Angels in America" (and typically excellent) but I can't remember her being in a Hollywood movie since "The River Wild." She was clearly the choice during the Eighties, with some solid competition from Jodie Foster. I hope she returns to acting more frequently now that she may have more time available. I think that Hilary Swank and Scarlett Johansson each have an extraordinary performance to their credit, but more is clearly needed. I think of Holly Hunter and Kathy Bates as good character actresses, but they're eons away from icon status.
Mickey Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Angelina Jolie is not just a lunatic with a pretty face. She can act. Emma Thompson might not have been born in America but she is a great actress. Kate Winslet is great although I think her range is limited.
stuckincincy Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Among the living, I'd say Patricia Neal.

R. Rich Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Among the living, I'd say Patricia Neal. 139551 I thought she retired from acting a long time ago, after she had a stroke or something like that. I do remember her performance in Hud, which is a very good movie.

BillsFanInTexas Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Kate Winslet is also very good 139437 I'll assume you're joking. Kate Winslet isn't American.
stuckincincy Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Why has nobody mentioned Julia Roberts? 139594 Yes, she is a good actress. The lips are a plus.
R. Rich Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Yes, she is a good actress. The lips are a plus. 139597 She looks like the Joker. That notwithstanding, she is a very talented actress.
USMCBillsFan Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 I know she's South African but Charlize Theron is an awesome actress. Her role in Monster was incredible. He did say they didn't have to be American but in American movies.
TigerJ Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 I agree that when she's active Meryl Streep is at the top. I also agree that Julia Roberts deserves consideration. One who has not been mentioned is Sigourney Weaver. She's done comedy (Ghost Busters), sci-fi/horror (Alien) and serious drama (Gorillas in the Mist).
