cåblelady Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 The last part is what every Bills fan needs to be aware of. The Ravens are wisely trying to play this out in the hopes that another team will get involved and drive up the price. If/When this happens, you can count us out of the Gaither sweepstakes...the Bills will not win a bidding war. Oh, those sneaky Ravens.
Buffalo Beeeews Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Impossible! We all know you don't spend tons of money and picks on pricey veterans! You build through the draft---and we now have Wang! Check out the BODOG odds of J. Russell's next spot: Bills #2 most likely at 7:2. Yikes! The betting public hates us. See my post: "Don't do it Ralph!"...
BuffaloRebound Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 If Gaither is going to be a free agent next year, why waste a 2nd rounder or more on him this year? With our QB situation, it's not like he will put us over the hump this year. I am more in favor of a veteran LT like Adams with the hopes of Wang or Bell eventually beating him out. If Wang or Bell can't do it, give Gaither huge money next year to protect Locker or Mallett without sacrificing a high draft pick.
BillsGuyInMalta Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Just to put a further damper on things, here are the latest tweets from Aaron Wilson, the Ravens Insider reporter. http://twitter.com/ravensinsider jared gaither didnt practice due to foot and toe inj harbaugh said hell get mri this week Jared Gaither has denied that his agent instructed him to sit out practice. John Harbaugh on Jared Gaither: 'It's basically a foot and a toe. He couldn't get through the first practice on Friday. It got worn out.' More Harbaugh on Gaither: "It got sore and he didn't feel he could go the rest of the time. That's what he said and that's where it stands Harbaugh cont. "He didn't tell me that he was protesting or anything like that. We had a conversation about a lot of things.." Harbaugh: "The reason he didn't practice is the foot, there is an issue there. He'll have an MRI and going to see a specialist this week. As much as I hate to say it, I think its clear that a trade to Buffalo is not going to happen any time soon (if at all, which is what I'm believing more and more)
BillsGuyInMalta Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Ouch. This tweet from Wilson just about kills this rumor. Team officials have said they haven't received trade offers that would prompt them to move offensive tackled Jared Gaither or other players Sorry Buffalo, looks like we're stuck with Bell.

Isn't this the same as saying no agreement has been reached? Because if they did receive an offer that would prompt them to move Gaither, then they would have. It doesn't mean an agreement won't be reached.
Webster Guy Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Do you know that there is no salary cap this year? There obviously will be a cap at some point. Any long term deal for a decent free agent has to take it into consideration.
DanInUticaTampa Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 time to go after brown! or just say a prayer to whoever our QB is.
5 Wide Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Posturing? I believe that is exactly what the Bills said about Peters. That Iraqi military spokesman also said the Americans were nowhere near Baghdad as there were Abrams tanks in the background too.....
BillsGuyInMalta Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 The optimism around this Gaither deal truly astounds me. I really wish I could be as optimistic as some of you, but every single sign I've seen over the last few days points to the Bills swinging and missing on this deal. Ozzie Newsome of the Ravens is a pretty straight shooter. If he said there were no "substantial trade offers" my best guess is the Bills came in and low-balled an offer, the Ravens shot them down immediately...and nothing has happened since.

Ozzie Newsome did not say there were "no substantial trade offers". The quote says a Ravens' official says "they haven't received trade offers that would prompt them to move offensive tackled Jared Gaither ". In other words, they haven't been offered anything worth agreeing to (yet). Actually, since they say they haven't received offers, perhaps they have received just one, from the Bills.
BillsGuyInMalta Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Ozzie Newsome did not say there were "no substantial trade offers". Yes he did. http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/rav...vens+Insider%29

Buddy strikes me as a pretty good poker player. I doubt he'd over-pay on the first offer. Similarly, Newsome's a good GM who'll hold out for the best deal he can make. But ultimately, he's also pragmatic enough to know that getting something for an asset that'll walk away for nothing next year is the way to go. Round 1 may be a stalemate, but this has a long way to go before someone blinks...

I know there is an ESPN report out there already saying the same thing but I doubt that has anything substantial backing it up. That way Buddy can counter with "well, if you really start dragging your feet we'll look elsewhere and you'll lose him for nothing next year". I still dont think Gaither to Buffalo happens, but if he does it clearly wont be any time soon.
Matt in KC Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 Yes he did. http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/rav...vens+Insider%29 I stand corrected. Thanks for linking.
EndZoneCrew Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 That Iraqi military spokesman also said the Americans were nowhere near Baghdad as there were Abrams tanks in the background too..... "There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"
Doc Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 The Bills should not give-up a 1st rounder for Gaither, unless it's conditional on him being named an all-pro or grading-out highly by some other objective/impartial analysis. He's a risk to become even more unmotivated once he gets the big money deal. The question is, do the Ravens want him for just the season and then to lose him for at-best a 3rd round (comp) pick in 2012, or a 2nd rounder +/- another pick in 2011 +/- a player this year?
