40 minute to an hour drive away, plus tips their doing pretty good, IMO.

I guess we have different definitions of "pretty good." 40k a year in NYC is basically the poverty line. And 40 min to an hour away doesn't get you very far when you factor in traffic.

The building owner pays the staff. Does some of it get passed through eventually to the tenants? Sure, but building owners are limited in how often they can raise common charges and are usually limited by leases in place and rent control laws that are stacked against them.

Of course not; tip are in cash. Nobody is reporting that. A lot of these guys make thousands at Christmastime.

Out here it comes from the HOA, that's why HOA with a doorman/security is a lot higher.

So you have no answer? Gotcha.

No need to twist up your panties Fez. The answer is in this thread and stories. Doormen do a lot more than open the door.

BTW, I have no interest in the Union wage issue, but pointing out that people who are under the impression that doormen do little more than open doors are wrong. A doorman is a jack of all trade job and people who live in high rise buildings pay a bit more in rent to have such a person working for them, and that person's wage is rightfully more than a parking garage attendant. And further, losing that person's services is inconvenient. Imagine if all the babysitters went on strike. Could the world get by? Yes. Would it be a huge inconvenience? Double yes. A doorman strike would have been like that for millions of people.
