The King of Kong - a Fistful of Quarters

It was a fun movie, for sure -- but be warned that it received quite a backlash from many of the people involved in the story. It presents itself as a documentary, but it reshapes a lot of the facts to create more drama than there probably was. As documentaries go, it wasn't very true to it material. Still, a fun time.

If you're interested in the facts behind the story, I can probably dig up some of the stuff I found a while back when I saw the movie.

Oh, and by the way: some dude just recently broke the record. It was just reported, I think, last week.

This movie surprised the hell outta me with how good it was. Read the summary from IMDB and if you have Netflix, start watching it.

Believe it or not, I've seen this movie three times. It's so well done, and you cannot script a better story of good versus evil, where the evildoer has a long, flowing mullet, to boot.

I know there is a website out there that takes issue with a bunch of the facts in the movie--but if you look at the website, it's just mostly quibbling over minor details.

(Now, I'm going to have "teenage wasteland" in my head all day!)

STEVE WEEBIE!

Can't believe anybody else has actually seen that movie. Don't know how I convinced the fiance to watch it, but we both ended up really liking it.

It's a great movie, I wish it was all true.

A lot of the factual contentions come from Billy, himself. So, if we're going by the documentarians' portrayal of him, those contentions are suspect, at best.

If you trust the genre, you have to trust the artists working in it to not "make **** up." And, if they portrayed Billy's minion network with honesty (based on their own experiences), it's likely the misinformation campaign was launched immediately after the doc was completed.

**King of Kong was in a trifecta of docs I had been meaning to see. In the last few months I have watched it and Spellbound. Up next, Wordplay.

I thoroughly enjoyed Spellbound, too.

Spellbound is probably my favorite documentary. Wordplay was just average, IMO, but I would check it out.

I want to see Man on Wire.

Here's the thread from a couple years ago . Rubes' links in his 7/10/2008 post are very interesting reading if you liked the documentary.

Awesome, thanks. I knew there was a thread about this here a while back, but I didn't have the time to search. My comments from that thread still stand.

Here is a story filed back in 2007 that talks about some of the distortions in the movie, for starters.

Also, here is a story from last month that discusses the brand new Donkey Kong champ, who beat both of those guys.

I love this movie. How it did not get nominated for Best Documentary at the Oscars is beyond me.

Of course this is not a documentary on global warming or showing how the USA is an evil country or making the USA military look like a bunch of thugs whose main purpose is killing and raping civilians during wartime. You make a documentary like that and you will win an award.

My one question is, how can you make a documentary where the primary focus is on Donkey Kong, and you do not even have this song in the movie?

Wordplay is excellent. Watched it a few years ago. I really like how you get a feel for the personalties of each guy. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for the heads up on Spellbound. No idea what its about but I like movies like WP and King of Kongs

I just started Netflix and have been tearing through the documentarys- and am always looking for recommdations. I will add your 3 to my list. I can recommend Food Inc, Man on a Wire, The cost of Walmart, and any Frontline episode.

Yes. I'd like to talk about how it's totally unfair that I can't get Katy Perry to give me a neck massage.

****, man. Tell me about it. My neck has been hurting like a mother nowadays and she won't even return my calls <_<

Can't get enough socialist propaganda, eh?

Food Inc. The western diet is the worst. Cancer, heart disease, and type 2 Diabetes are as American. We are collectively fat. Why is that? Shouldn't we want to eat healthy and be healthy? Farms are the backbone of this country. Eat locally grown food, eat in season. Sounds forward thinking, not dogmatic. What is socialistic about that?

Walmart- I never shop there and I do my shopping at locally. What exactly is socialist about that?

Frontline- explains the banking crisis and our economy. Obviously laissez faire did not work. Shouldn't we learn from our mistakes? Or should we keep our head in the sand?

Man on a Wire-enjoyable documentary. I just thought it was pretty cool the way they pulled it off. Pretty incredible IMO
