CowgirlsFan
Any suggestions? Lease...buy used...or new? Receiving $ 5,000.00 as a settlement.
H2o
Used, but previously leased by the dealership as you know that they've done all of the required maintenance and usually have a had mileage restrictions. The value on new vehicles drop as soon as they leave the lot. It's all in what you want though. In an economy like this, I'd say buy something outright with the $5k and not have to worry about a payment.
Just Jack
Used Toyota's are pretty cheap right now.

Marv's Neighbor
If you've got a CARMAX near you, that's a good place to start. You can even do most of yur looking online.
MarkyMannn
Any suggestions? Lease...buy used...or new? Receiving $ 5,000.00 as a settlement. First I would argue the $5000. That's trade-in. You should be getting an amount to REPLACE your car. NADA retail is $7800 depending on model, miles, and condition. You aren't getting another 05 Stratus for $5000 unless that is minus what you owed on the car. Go used too
Buffaloed in Pa
Hope you are not hurt. At least you got rid of that Chrysler product.I would buy a car a couple years old . Doesn`t take the big hit on Value. Getting a fairly new car for a much better price. Just the way I do it.

Lori
You OK? That's the big question. Cars can be replaced. As for that, I never got into the idea of leasing. If I'm paying that much money for something, I want to own it when I'm done. Had pretty good luck with my first two cars -- both three years old when I got them, but in good shape and with low-to-moderate mileage. (This dealership sends most of its trade-ins to auction, keeping only the cleanest ones.) Decided to go new the last time, but only because I could get the GM employee discount, and plan on driving this one till it drops.
BuffaloBill
You OK? Agreed, hope you are OK. - used cars - especially if you know the previous owner or have service records is the way to go.
CountDorkula
Queing old SNL skit.... I DIRVE A DODGE STRATUS!!!! I dirve a truck now(Ford Ranger), used to drive a ford Escort ZX2, and would not go back to a car for the world. I had less of a down payment than that 5K and still only pay about $175 a month! EDIT: Go Used, and buy. Im not an exper but leasing only requires a 3 year term and after that your payments increase if you decide to purchase (which they dont tell you) and you get little if any trade in vallue at the end of 3 yrs if you decide not to. DrDawkinstein
buy used, for sure. i recommend carmax as well. bought my car from there and got a great deal and was in and out in a couple of hours. use their website and you can see the entire stock of local stores near you. i knew the type of car i wanted and kept an eye on their site until one morning they added another in my price range. called and made an appointment, went and checked the car out, test drove, and was driving off the lot before lunch. overall great experience. no haggling on the price because there was no need to. i had 5 stores to select from so my chances of finding a deal were good, and it looks like they have about 5 locations near arlington as well. good luck. el Tigre
I see everyone here suggests buying used. I'm not gonna say that's wrong but there is another side to that. I've bought used and I've bought new,and I've had mixed luck with used. When financing you have to look closely at the options available to you. Sometimes you can get superior financing,if you have top notch credit,by going new. Sometimes the financing difference is enough to offset the price difference between used and new. Also, sometimes when you find that perfect used car - great model, low miles, good price - you end up with a lemon. There may be a reason the previous owner traded in such a nice car in such great condition. It was nickle and diming them,so they traded it in on something new. If it's still under warranty,it may not cost you money, but it's still a time consuming pain. Just some things to think about.

I've bought used and I've bought new,and I've had mixed luck with used. Although I advised used, there is something to what you say. My used sucsess has been about 50% with new car dealers no less where you should be getting the best car
