Dante
Sometimes I question the company's business tactics, but the move to FU to China was spot on. Way to go Sergei Google is one of my favorite companies. A couple other things they are up to. First they are planning to starting their own internet service. Apparently 100 times faster than what is available today. Here Ive also read that they want to enter the electric power field. Not sure if its just to service their own needs or to sell to the public.

The company's business tactics outside its core search business are questionable at best, and I would attribute the success of its ventures to a very good PR strategy. All items you identified are bound to fail, just like their radio ad business, wireless internet ventures, etc.

Seriously, they have tons of capital it seems and they are branching out into the cell/netbook area with fairly low cost stuff. Why are you down on them? What am I missing? To Google's reaction to China: I find their stand justified, even if the cyber-attacks weren't from the Chinese government/military they have every right to back down from a business venture they object to morally. Dante
I keep staring down their Nexus Phone. Hard to give up my iPhone. I really wanted to get one but I have about 9 months left on my G1. I guess I'll be happy in the end though. When my current contract ends maybe the next gen Nexus will be out.

I'd wait until Nexus 2 comes out, or until the other makers come out with newer generation Android phones. Samsung just announced a pretty one. They've done a very good job of making money off other people's effort (print media, for example) Ironically, the press treats their entry into a new field as a fate accompli without figuring out that they have no history nor resources to do the job right. Case in point, the much hailed WiFI experiment in SF. People who understand the economics of networks knew it wqould be a failure. But everyone else gobbled it up. Same with their fiber plan. They may do it, but it won't make money. But they'll benefit from free advertising that reporters love to give them.

Samsung just announced a pretty one. My plan is up in July which will be after the next iPhone should be out. I'll probably just get another one. Not to turn this into the Consumer Forum but my biggest hangup with the Nexus is that there is no native iTunes application. I know about Doubletwist and others but I'd just like to keep iTunes and be done with it. I have made a huge commitment to iTunes (maybe I shouldn't have but that ship sailed 1000 purchased songs and TV shows and movies ago). If the Nexus had a native iTunes application, I'd probably make the jump. I suspect that the next iPhone will finally have mutitasking and a flash camera. And I hope and pray to the god I don't believe in that it is not locked into AT&T.

No need for itunes. In fact, I'm separated completely from them as i just got a Zune HD device. So between Amazon and Zune Pass I'm set. Like you I have a bunch of downloaded itunes, not nearly as much as you though. I just don't want to be a slave to Apple anymore for my music and other downloads so I'm just cutting those mp4s loose. Small price. For you, tougher decision.

There are nice conversion programs to convert from iTunes to one of the Android players, Doubletwist being the most popular. For maybe $300, I can convert my entire iTunes library to the lesser DRMed format that allows for even easier transfer of files. As much as I don't want to be slave to iTunes, it is better than Amazon especially for non-music. And the iTunes store is definitely better than Amazon. I need some hand time with a Nexus to consider it further. As someone suggested, I'll probably wait out to see the Nexus 2 vs. the iPhone next G. GG
Damn my non-diety. It's expected to still be tied to AT&T with the understanding that the network will show significant improvement by YE 2010.

And I hope and pray to the god I don't believe in that it is not locked into AT&T. Are your prayers being answered? Report: New iPhone to be on non-AT&T networks Apple plans to release a new iPhone this year that could operate using Verizon, Sprint and some smaller carriers, according to a Wall Street Journal report Tuesday. The move, if it happens, would be a big shift from the current iPhone, which only works in the U.S. with AT&T - a sore point for some users. The paper cited "people briefed by the company." Spokespeople for Apple, Verizon and Vodaphone Group, an international carrier, refused to comment, according to the Journal. An AT&T spokesman said there has been lots of incorrect speculation about an iPhone that runs CDMA, a wireless network used by Verizon, Sprint and others. "We haven't seen one yet and only Apple knows when that might occur," the spokesman told the paper. Apple did not immediately return a message from CNN.com Tuesday seeking comment. Apple has had an exclusive relationship with AT&T in the United States since 2007. The unnamed sources also told the Journal what's considered an open secret in tech circles - that Apple will separately release a new version of its current iPhone this summer. The new phone will be thinner and have a faster processor, two souces reportedly told the Journal. Speculation that Apple would expand the iPhone to other wireless carriers has abounded for months. Many reports, citing Apple sources, have said such a move was coming. But the Journal report sent Apple stock soaring Tuesday morning. The stock, which already closed at a record $232.39, jumped as much as 6.41 points (2.75 percent) in after-hours trading. One source said the non-AT&T iPhones will begin production in September, while others said the schedule is still up in the air.
John Adams
Are your prayers being answered? I was trying to find this thread at OT this morning. The WSJ had this story. Who knows? I won't leave AT&T if Apple just unlocks the next generation of iPhones. Others can go to Verizon and wherever. I came from Verizon and it was no better for calls. And CDMA is ****. Verizon will beat AT&T to LTE but there won't be LTE phones for a while. AT&T just doesn't have the bandwidth so support all us iPhone surfers.
