Just Jack Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Filling it out I see they want my name and phone number. Do I have to give those? I figure they already got my name on the form they mailed to me, and I don't want to give out my phone number. Can I just answer the basic questions, age, race, etc? Or are the census police gonna break down my door and arrest me?
WWVaBeach Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 I was worried about that also. Kind of un-needed info that they're asking for IMO. I filled mine out today. BTW they don't have your name until you fill it in. I guess if you wanted to you could name yourself anything you want to. I'll bet they get some great "porn names".
Just Jack Posted March 21, 2010 Author Posted March 21, 2010 BTW they don't have your name until you fill it in. I guess if you wanted to you could name yourself anything you want to. I was tempted to put in several children, all different races but with the same last name. Kinda making myself the white Travis Henry.

cantankerous Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Just write down how many in your household and write UNCONSTITUTIONAL across the rest. You don't have to answer that crap.
Chilly Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Just write down how many in your household and write UNCONSTITUTIONAL across the rest. You don't have to answer that crap. What section of the constitution makes those questions unconstitutional?
Fezmid Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 The 5th? What section of the constitution makes those questions unconstitutional?
cantankerous Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 What section of the constitution makes those questions unconstitutional? Well if you want to give the government all that information be my guest. They don't need to know any of that stuff.
PromoTheRobot Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Here's a bulletin. There are no storm troopers or black helicopters. It's a friggin' census form. PTR
Chilly Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 The 5th? The 5th amendment? Nope: No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. Well if you want to give the government all that information be my guest. They don't need to know any of that stuff. You're the one that called it unconstitutional, not me. It's on you to back up your claim by pointing out how it's unconstitutional. By the way, it's also illegal to not completely answer the census form: http://uscode.house.gov/uscode-cgi/fastweb...()%20%20AND%20( (a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.
Just Jack Posted March 22, 2010 Author Posted March 22, 2010 http://www.wcpo.com/content/news/localshow...hNNDRgFqiQ.cspx Looks like they'll only fine me up to $100 then. If they can find me.
Chilly Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Looks like they'll only fine me up to $100 then. If they can find me. It's highly doubtful they'll fine you, but it's more likely that a census worker will follow up in person. They mailed you a letter, didn't they? How hard do you think it'll be for them to find you?

They mailed you a letter, didn't they? How hard do you think it'll be for them to find you? Well, when I work out of town during the week, and am usually out of the house on the weekend, they'll have a hard time finding me in person.
Dr. Fong Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 It's highly doubtful they'll fine you, but it's more likely that a census worker will follow up in person. They mailed you a letter, didn't they? How hard do you think it'll be for them to find you? They will and then if you still don't cooperate you will be fined. It's rare, but I worked for the census back in 2000 and one lady that kept dodging me and breaking appointments got fined.

Nothing else. That is all the info they need. They don't need sex, name, etc.
BillsWatch Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 The constitution says that they have to count the population every 10 years. Nothing else. That is all the info they need. They don't need sex, name, etc. There were court decisions including Supreme Court which declared it legal but the cases I know were before the 14th/15th and 19th Amendments so I do not know if they are still valid.
bbb Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 http://www.wcpo.com/content/news/localshow...hNNDRgFqiQ.cspx That article says this: Shortest Form in Years The 2010 Census is just one page, with ten questions, which makes it one of the shortest census forms in history. Is that true? I glanced at mine and looks like it was 4 or more pages with tons of questions?
Chilly Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 The constitution says that they have to count the population every 10 years. Nothing else. That is all the info they need. They don't need sex, name, etc. Which doesn't make it unconstitutional to require other questions to be answered. The constitution only requires that it be done. The lack of restrictions != a restriction in and of itself.
ExiledInIllinois Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 They will and then if you still don't cooperate you will be fined. It's rare, but I worked for the census back in 2000 and one lady that kept dodging me and breaking appointments got fined. What happened then? What's a 100 bucks... Did they still get the info out of her. Can you just give them a c-note and be done with it? Anyway... Why can't they be happy with just the number of people in the house... Why all the other information? Yet... It is not unconstitutional what they ask. Article 1, section 2 states: Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct. So... Whatever the law states, I guess they can ask.
