It really is harder than people think to identify a ship at sea from a distance. Not a lot of detail (gets washed out in the haze), and usually no visual reference for depth perception to guess the size.

 

But it's harder still when you're stupid. Really, guys...carry binoculars or something. :w00t:

It's like when we used to go sailing of Orange county. It was great to listen to the radio warnings from the Navy ships to boats. "Come closer and you're !@#$ing toast"

Why on earth would they have not taken the opportunity to sink all the ships and reduced the pirate population by a few?
